While the season for the Greene County Rams girls’ basketball team hasn’t brought a win in their first 10 games, they are staying positive and focusing on improvement.

For the Rams girls, this last week featured matchups against the West Marshall Trojans Jan. 7, where they fell 71-7, and the South Hamilton Hawks Jan. 10, which resulted in a 53-20 loss for the Rams, dropping them to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Against West Marshall, Makenna Ebersole led the way in points with five and led the team in rebounds with nine. Kaycee Pittman was the team’s second-leading scorer with two and three different players held the second spot in rebounds with Leah McCormick, Sara Morlan and Faith Jaimes-Diaz all grabbing two boards apiece.

In their game against South Hamilton, Ebersole again led in points with seven and Pittman and Jaimes-Diaz were tied for second with two apiece. Jennifer Robbins led the way in rebounding with nine boards.

The Rams team continues to showcase a no-quit attitude as the young team focuses on improving each time they step out on the court this year. While they continue to hunt down their first win of the 2024-25 season, you don’t see them getting discouraged.

“They are absolutely maintaining a positive attitude and working hard. No matter what the scoreboard says, they keep pushing and giving it everything they have. We focus on other successes that we can have throughout the season, and not just the wins,” head coach Tori Ogden said. “It has been great to watch them all grow as players and as people. This is a great group of players, and they are all making improvements throughout the season. They are trying new things in games and learning the game even more.”

While the Rams are in the midst of a battle this year in a tough conference, the players are eager to learn more and continue to get better at their craft. This, mixed with fielding a team with no seniors, means this team can continue to trend upward.

“Some areas I want to continue to focus on are cleaning up our turnovers and gaining more basketball IQ. They are great about asking questions to learn more about the game, as well as making suggestions that they see on the court,” Ogden added.

One thing is sure: Greene County loves its high school sports teams, and the Rams girls’ basketball team is no different. The support the community gives to the student-athletes can go a long way.

“We want to thank the community for the positive support that we have. We know that we are the underdog, but we hope that the community sees how much they are improving as a team and how much potential there is. We appreciate everyone that wants to be part of this building process,” Ogden concluded.

This week, the Rams were expected to take on Manson-NW Webster on Monday, Perry on Tuesday, PCM on Thursday, and Grand View Christian on Friday to round out an extremely busy week.

The extended calendar has the Rams girls facing Madrid on Jan. 20, PCM on Jan. 24, and Nevada on Jan. 28.
