Caleb Rainey, featured poet at Ekphrasis this past Sunday, will return to Jefferson Saturday, Nov. 23, for “A Day with Caleb ‘The Negro Artist’ Rainey and Friends”.
The Saturday event will include a 10 am workshop on writing poetry, a noon luncheon, and a 1:30 pm screening of the 2024 documentary about Rainey, “The Negro Artist,” produced by Emmy Award-winning journalist Nik Heftman and The Seven Times.
Rainey has performed his spoken word poetry in Washington DC, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, New York City, and London, and now Jefferson, IA.
The workshop and luncheon will be held in the lower level Business Center at the Sierra Community Theatre, with the documentary upstairs on the big screen.
All are welcome. Persons who plan to attend the workshop and luncheon are asked to RSVP by text to 515-370-4002 for planning purposes. There is no admission charge; free will donations will be accepted to help defray costs.
The afternoon will feature live spoken word performances by Rainey and others, followed by the documentary. Attendees are invited to participate in a Q&A session with Rainey and Heftman, gaining insights into the creative process behind the film and the impact of spoken word poetry across Iowa.

“We hope you can join us for an unforgettable day celebrating Iowa success, artistic expression and the transformative power of poetry,” said organizer Chris Henning.
“A Day with Caleb Rainey and Friends” is brought to Jefferson through a collaborative effort of local writers and poets of the First United Coven, the Sierra Community Theatre, Jefferson Matters: Tower View Team, with a nod to the Iowa Writers Collaborative, Okoboji Writers Retreat, and The Seven Times.
