While homecoming king usually means who was crowned from homecoming court, the Greene County Rams football team was crowned king of the gridiron.
The Saydel Eagles stepped onto Linduska Field hoping to spoil the night for the Rams, which, up until the fourth quarter, looked like it could happen. The Rams headed into the fourth quarter up just 18-14 but were dominant in the fourth frame, outscoring the Eagles 26-0 for a 44-14 win. The Rams also churned out 298 yards on the ground, mainly from Nick Stream, who accounted for 141 yards and one touchdown.
“We started executing much better in all phases of the game, and our focus level went up a notch,” head coach Caden Duncan said. “Our runners were hitting the holes hard and making smart decisions, and our line was getting off the ball and getting engaged.”
Defensively, the Rams gave up only 237 yards total, less than what they rushed for on their own. The Rams have been able to put up impressive performances, and now is the time they will be looking to put it all together as the postseason is quickly approaching.
“We preach E+R=O. When you have an event, you need to respond appropriately to get the outcome you want. The guys buy into that, and it’s good to see it come to life,” Duncan concluded. “We need to become more consistent in all phases and continue to improve our physicality. We show flashes of being a pretty good team but just need to be more consistent down the stretch of the season.”
So far this season, the Rams are 2-2 in games, but their two losses have been relatively close, with a recent loss of 21-17 to Atlantic and the loss in their season opener to Carroll 34-21. With four games left to play, the Rams are behind where they were last year. Through four games, they were 3-1 in 2023 but lost out the rest of the year, something they will look to avoid this year.
Next, the Rams travel to Carroll Athletic Stadium to take on the Kuemper Knights. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7 pm Friday. The Knights have long been a tough opponent for the Rams as they hold the historical advantage, 11-4.
