Greene County FFA places second in FFA equestrian team award

Awards to other county residents

The Iowa State Fair took place Aug. 8 through the 18th, bringing plenty of opportunities for talented individuals to showcase their work for the chance to bring home prizes.

On Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the fair, and Thursday, Aug. 8 (the first day of the fair), the FFA Horse Show was judged, with Madison Higgins of Jefferson (Greene County FFA) bringing home various awards. Higgins won Champion Open Walk/Trot; Champion Junior Western Pleasure (two and three-year-old), and Champion Western-Type Horse. Higgins’ success helped propel Greene County FFA to second in the equestrian team award, which is given to the top 10 chapters out of 47 competing. 

The Decorated Cakes competition was judged on Monday, Aug. 5, prior to the start of the fair. Taking third in the Adult Open – Tiered division was Tanya Jackson of Scranton. Entries were judged on execution, appearance and neatness, difficulty, originality and edible decorations. 

Leah Thompson of Jefferson took second in the drawing portion of the Fine Arts Competition at the fair. 552 entries were examined with 408 pieces chosen to be displayed in the competition. 

Garden growth knowledge was tested in the Weed Identification Contest on Friday, Aug. 9. Aiden Anderson of Paton took first place in the Youth category at the Iowa State Fair.
