Funeral services for Janice Adkins, age 89, of Jefferson will be held Aug. 17, 2024 at First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Interment will be in Franklin Township Cemetery near Cooper.
Janice Fern (Lee) Adkins was born Oct. 8, 1934, to Hugh and Berniece (Smith) Lee. Also waiting for her was her sister Vivian. Janice attended country school until fifth grade and graduated in 1952 from Jefferson High School. Janice married her high school sweetheart, Dean Adkins, on Oct. 19, 1952. To this union were born five children, Mark, Murray, Joni, Cris, and Valerie.
Janice and Dean enjoyed 58-1/2 years together. Besides farming they enjoyed traveling to several countries such as Spain, Canada, Nova Scotia, Australia, New Zealand, and with an RV they covered many areas of the United States, including Alaska.
Janice worked at the Greene County assessor’s office to help the kids with college. She enjoyed music by playing the church organ and singing for others at ceremonies. Other activities included crocheting afghans for her family and others, making baby quilts, traveling, playing cards and being with friends.
Janice was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, having been baptized at the age of 12. She served the church in many capacities.
Janice passed away August 12, 2024, at Regency Park Nursing and Rehab in Jefferson.
She is survived by her children Joni of Cedar Rapids, Cris (Jacquie) of Bagley, and Valerie of Jefferson; special niece Jill DeCarlo and husband David of West Des Moines; special nephew Denny and Susie Bryan of Coralville; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was proceeded in death by her soulmate Dean; sons Mark and Murray; grandson Devin Adkins; sister Vivian Bryan and husband Carroll; brothers-in-law Merle and Vern; many cousins and friends.
