Routine business for Scranton city council

The Scranton city council handled routine business during their 40-minute meeting on July 9. Fund transfers and the allocation of ARPA money resolutions were unamiously approved. A change was made to the insurance, raising the deductibles for building and auto insurance.

Ashley Squibb reported the Scranton Fishing Day was the best they have hosted so far. Ninety youngsters were registered and 30 extra youth showed up. She was very pleased with the donations and sponsors this year. Several guest speakers including a Conservation officer provided interesting information. She mentioned the pond may need to be restocked with fish.

Squibb said people are interested in renting the snack shack at the ball diamonds when they host events such as baseball and frisbee golf. She noted the shack is in need of repairs and she will look into grants to fund the project. Squibb shared the ball diamond also needs work. It was suggested that some fundraising could be conducted to raise the money needed.

Library director Tammy Ross reported they have been busy this summer. More youngsters are attending the library programs. Kristina McDonald wants to cut back on her hours so it is possible the library could be closed occasionally. Squibb offered to help out to keep the library open.

Mayor Jerry Boyd provided the public works report, stating both water and sewer plants are operating well. The workers have been busy with mowing. Work will begin soon on the gazebo. 

A split vote occurred when the fire department asked to use the city and Community Center parking lot. The motion carried with Squibb casting the dissenting vote.
