Ram softball team drops three

The Greene County softball team fell in three games last week, but despite the losses, held 11th ranked West Marshall to just three runs, and fell to 12-8 Kuemper by only one run. 

The Rams traveled to Nevada on Monday, June 17, falling 13-1 to the Cubs. Greene County scored their sole run in the top of the first inning, with Nevada coming out swinging, driving in five runs in their half. The Rams saw two hits in the game, both singles with one from Alivya Smith and one from Daniele Madsen. There were six Ram strikeouts, three walks, one batter hit by pitch and one reaching on an error. 

On the field, Greene County did themselves no favors, with 10 putouts and seven errors, giving a fielding percentage of just 65-percent. Alaina Heard and Madsen were on the mound, allowing seven hits with four walks, two hit batters and five strikeouts. 

Wednesday was another road trip, this time to West Marshall to face the 11th-ranked, 17-4 Trojans. While coming home with a loss, the Rams managed to hold the team to only three runs with one in the first, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. Three Ram hits were smacked by the team, a single each from Payton Kokenge and Addison Gannon and a double from Madsen. 

Greene County had an improved fielding performance, with five assists, 19 putouts and two errors on 26 total chances. Heard allowed six hits with one hit batter, fanning two. 

The team traveled to Kuemper Catholic High School on Thursday, falling 5-4 to the Knights in a tight game. The teams were tied at three going into the sixth inning. Both teams scored runs in their halves of the sixth, with the Knights holding the Rams from scoring in the seventh, but the Knights sent one across home plate to seal the win. 

The bats were moving on Thursday with eight hits from the Rams. Gannon smacked a triple and a single, Kokenge and Morlan hit two singles each, Kaycee Pittman and Madsen each added a single.

Defensively, the Rams had 20 putouts and just one error on 28 total chances. Heard threw 124 pitches, with nine hits allowed, along with three walks and four strikeouts.

The team travels to Perry on Wednesday to face the 6-15 Jayettes. Next week, the Rams host Denison-Schleswig on Monday, July 1, and sixth-ranked St. Edmond on Wednesday, July 3.
