Greene County district court, week ending June 7

In Greene County district court Jason Lee Miller, 46, of Boone was granted a deferred judgment June 6 after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. He must pay a $430 civil penalty and $330 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s feed. Court costs were $223.84. A charge of possession of marijuana was dismissed. A related case in magistrate court in which Miller was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed. Court costs were $80. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)

Jacob Ryan Brouwer, 23, of Spirit Lake was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was placed on informal probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year, and he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Nicole Victoria Thompson, 28, of Cherokee was sentenced to one year in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine. The jail term was suspended and she was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. Thompson was fined $430 with a $64.50 surcharge. She must pay $500 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $309.50 court costs. A charge of possession of marijuana was dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Austin Taylor Lawrence, 24, of Urbandale was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession or marijuana. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. A judgment was entered for a $430 civil penalty and $160.96 court costs. Two counts of unlawful possession prescription drug were dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Christian Michael O’Brien, 20, of Jefferson was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was placed on informal probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year. He must also undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. A judgment was entered for a $430 civil penalty. He must pay an amount not to exceed $500 restitution for his court appointed fees and $100 court costs. A companion case in magistrate court in which O’Brien was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed. O’Brien must pay $60 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Emmanuel Sang, 43, of Des Moines was sentenced to 180 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. All but two days of the jail term were suspended and he was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. He must also complete a drinking drivers course at a community college. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48 hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail time. He was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge/ one-half will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted license. He must pay $500 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Suanne Elaine Winters, 53, of Boone was sentenced to 180 days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license revoked. All but three days of the jail time were suspended and she was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. She was fined $1,000 with a $150 surcharge. She must pay $500 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs.

In a separate case, Winters was sentenced to 180 days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. All but two days of the jail time was suspended, with the sentences to be consecutive. She was placed on probation to Boone/Greene Count Probation on that case as well. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. Winters was fined $1,000 with a $187.50 surcharge. Court costs were $100. Persons pleaded not guilty as follows: James Michael Timmons, 44, of Jefferson, domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness; and Jeremy Ernest Andrews, 36, of Jefferson, fraudulent practice- third degree and gambling avoid set off. A trial date was set for Aug. 27 for Timmons and for July 23 for Andrews.

Cases were initiated in district court as follows: Nicholas John Parris, 41, of Boone, harassment- first degree; Jon Michael Kurth, 40, of Ankeny, possession of marijuana, and in a separate case, possession of methamphetamine; Jeremy Ernest Andrews, 36, of Scranton, driving while license barred; and Cristian Lugo Cortez, 30, of Marshalltown, driving while license barred.
