Primary election is Tuesday

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, June 4, in Greene County, and across the state for the purpose of nominating Democratic, Libertarian, and Republican candidates for federal, state and county offices for the general election. 

There is a contest on the Republican ballot in the District 5 supervisor race but no races on the Democratic ticket. 

District 5 supervisor Pete Bardole is being challenged by Sue Bose. The winner will run in the Nov. 4 general election.

Also on the Republican primary ballot are Joe Gannon, supervisor District 1. Incumbent Mick Burkett is not running for re-election. John Muir is seeking re-election in District 4. County auditor Billie Jo Hoskins, who was appointed in July 2023 to fill the vacancy when Jane Heun retired, is on the Republican primary ballot, as is sheriff Jack Williams.

In the Democratic primary, Greg Ruth is running in supervisor District 1. Victoria Riley is running in supervisor District 4. There are no Democrat primary candidates for supervisor District 5, auditor and sheriff.

There are no Libertarians on the primary ballot.

Also on the ballot are the offices of U.S. Representative District 3, State Senator District 24 and State Representative District 47. The Democrats have a contest for U.S. Representative between Lanon Baccam and Melissa Vine. 

Absentee ballots may be cast in person at the auditor’s office through June 3. 

On Election Day, voters will cast either a Democratic, Libertarian, or Republican ballot. Only voters who are registered with the Democratic, Libertarian, or Republican parties (or people who declare their affiliation with one of these parties at their polling location) may vote in primary elections. Only the candidates for that party will appear on the ballot. 

Please note that presidential candidates do not appear on the primary election ballot in Iowa; presidential and vice-presidential candidates are nominated via the political parties’ national conventions.

The polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm at the following locations: 

Central – Clover Hall, Fairgrounds, 601 E. Lincoln Way Street, Jefferson 

East –   St. Brigid Parish Center, 602 Hager Street East, Grand Junction 

Jefferson 1 – Greene County Community Center       204 W. Harrison Street, Jefferson 

Jefferson 2 – Greene County Community Center       204 W. Harrison Street, Jefferson 

North – Community Center, 410 Sand Street, Churdan 

West    – Community Room/City Hall, 900 Eagle Street, Scranton 

Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered in their current residential precinct, voters registering to vote on Election Day and voters changing precincts, must also provide proof of residence. A voter who is unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence, if required) has the following options: (1) may have the voter’s identity/residence attested to by another registered voter in the precinct; (2) prove identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents; (3) cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the county auditor’s office by 12 noon on Monday, June 10. Election Day Registrant attesters must provide an approved form of identification.
