Greene County district court, week ending May 17

In Greene County district court Brandon Lee Ferguson, 25, of Jefferson was sentenced May 15 to 10 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. The jail time was suspended and he was placed on probation to the Greene County sheriff for one year. Ferguson was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay an amount not to exceed $500 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $140 court costs. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)

Timothy R. Williams, 48, of Jefferson was sentenced to five years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- third offense. All but 30 days of the prison term was suspended; he may serve that time in one-week increments. He was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for three years. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Williams was fined $3,125 with a $468.75 surcharge. A charge of driving while license revoked was dismissed. Court costs were $140. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Star N. Gifford, 32, of Jefferson was sentenced to 10 days in jail, with all but two days suspended, after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. She may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail time. She must complete a community college drinking driver’s course and she must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. Gifford was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge; both were suspended. The court ruled she is unable to pay restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $140. In a separate case a charge of driving while license revoked was dismissed. Gifford must pay $100 court costs in that case. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Persons pleaded not guilty to charges in district court as follows: Truemon Glenn Phillips, 54, of Albia, operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana; Jason Dean Smits, 42, of Jefferson, possession of methamphetamine and keeping premises or vehicle for controlled substance violation; Jason William Sheldahl, 53, of Story City, possession of methamphetamine- third or subsequent offense; Deidra Raedean Sheets, 60, of Gowrie, operate vehicle without owner’s consent; Joseph Henry Charleston III, 53, of Manning, domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness and harassment- first degree; Carolos Ricardo Gonzales, 48, of Dayton, driving while license barred; Nicolas Balderas Rodriguez, 61, of Jefferson, operating while intoxicated, and in a separate case, another charge of operating while intoxicated. Trial dates were sent for June 18 for Phillips, Sheldahl and Rodriguez, and for July 23 for other defendants named.

Cases were initiated in district court during the week ending May 17 as follows: Jeremy Ernest Andrews, 35, of Jefferson, fraudulent practice- third degree and gambling- avoid setoff; and Cynthia Sue Baugh, 66, of Jefferson, child endangerment.
