The Greene County boys soccer team wrapped up the regular season last week, going 3-0 with solid wins over Grand View Christian, Nevada and East Sac County.
On 6, the Rams hosted Grand View Christian for Senior Night. Seniors honored for their time on the team were Gabe Ebersole, Jack Hansen, Nathan Behne, Cody Allen, Gesser Gutierres, Landon Carstens, Manuel Flores, Kolby Angell, Zeke Binkley and Brynley Ruzicka.
The team romped to a 10-0 win over the Thunder, putting an end to the match just six minutes into the second half. Gutierres had six goals from six shots on the goal. Behne had two goals and three assists, with Angell adding one goal and Flores another, his first career varsity goal. Fredy Aguilar had three assists, with Hansen credited with two and Angell one. Ebersole had one save as goalie.
Coach Carl Behne said about the game: “Nice job by the all senior back line. Not much made it past half.”
The Rams next play Humboldt Monday, May 20, at Humboldt High School. The winner of that game advances to the state qualifying match.
The team hosted their final regular season game the next day, facing Nevada. In a hard fought game, the Rams took the match 3-2 with 46 seconds left.
Gutierres had two goals, with one by Behne. Behne led in assists with two, Aguilar adding one. Ebersole had six saves, including a penalty kick save.
“Defense played well and the team had multiple big chunks of time where we played strong, physical soccer,” commented coach Behne. “We just need that for 80 minutes, not 60-70. Proud of the final regular season home win for the seniors.”
On Friday, the Rams traveled to Wall Lake to face East Sac County, with what coach Behne described as a “solid win,” especially considering the 25 mph winds and a “tiny field” making the match “a little interesting.” The match also saw six yellow cards, four for the Raiders and two for the Rams.
Four goals were scored by Gutierres with one from Jack Hansen. Behne had two assists and there was one each from Hansen and Aguilar. Ebersole had five saves in the box.
“Overall, passed well and played defense well,” coach Behne commented.
They Rams started post season play Monday at home with an 11-1 win over the Panorama Panthers. The game ended via the 10-goal rule shortly into the second half.
The Rams advanced to face Humboldt on Monday, May 20, at Humboldt High School. The winner of that game advances to the state qualifier game. The other side of the bracket saw Grinnell versus Ballard on Monday, May 13, with the winner advancing to face Perry on May 20, and the winner of that game advancing to the state qualifying match.
