Police blotter – April 2024

Tuesday, April 30: At 4:33 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the Greene County High School parking lot. Regan Grow of Bagley was operating 2013 Cadillac XTS, owned by CMG Inc. of Bagley, when she attempted to back from a parking space and struck a passing 2012 Impala. The Impala is owned by Justin Towers and was operated by Natalie Towers of Jefferson. Damage to Grow’s vehicle was estimated at $200. Damage to Towers’ vehicle was estimated at $100. No citation issued as the accident occurred on private property. At 7:52 pm a property owner advised an officer of suspicious persons at a residence in the 600 block of E. Adams St. He provided a vehicle license plate number to the officer. The officer followed up with the subject at his residence. Merissa Olson, 34, of Jefferson was present. The officer arrested her on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of possession of controlled substance.*

Monday, April 29: At 2:34 pm callers advised of vehicles stopped in the roadway near Westwood and Linwood Dr. Several vehicles had to stop in the area because of this. Traffic was backing up and it was reported two of the drivers were shoving another driver in the road. The officer’s investigation led to two of the drivers being issued a summons to appear for disorderly conduct. Andrew Kekoa Martin, 20, of Scranton and Devin Thomas Schmidt, 20, of Jefferson will appear in court for the charge. At 3:34 pm a complainant reported a rock breaking a window at his residence in the 400 block of E. Madison St. He reported a neighbor was mowing when this occurred. The officer spoke to the neighbor, who agreed it was most likely thrown by his mower. Both parties agreed the neighbor would pay for replacement of the window. At 4:57 pm a complainant reported a large groundhog in his garage in the 1200 block of Riverside Dr. The officer coaxed the animal out of the garage and it left the area.

Sunday, April 28: At 3:47 pm a complainant advised of catching a stray puppy near Hwy. 4 and 175th St north of Jefferson. An officer placed the dog in the Community Animal Shelter. At 4:08 pm an officer investigated an accident in the parking lot at Wild Rose Casino. Trevor Wishman of Jefferson legally parked his 2006 Ford Mustang. Gregory Gott of Jefferson struck Wishman’s vehicle as he attempted to park his 2014 Ford Focus next to it. Gott was cited for fail to provide proof of financial liability. His vehicle was not damaged. Damage to Wishman’s vehicle was estimated at $2,000.

Saturday, April 27: At 8:21 am a complainant reported a burglary to a shed on her property in the 200 block of E. Perry St. The door to the shed had been forced open and numerous hand tools were now missing. The officer is investigating. At 12:03 pm staff at HyVee reported a theft at the store. The officer is investigating. At 2:10 pm callers advised of a fight in progress at the Greene County fairgrounds. The officer was assisted by deputies. The officers spoke to several subjects and arrested Daniel Lee Rosenow, 37, of Jefferson on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both simple misdemeanors*.

Friday, April 26: At 1:55 pm the Lake City police department requested an officer to check a Jefferson address for a wanted subject. The officer located the subject at a residence in the 100 block of N. Olive St. The subject began having a medical issue and was transported to ER by Greene County ambulance for an evaluation. The subject was later cleared by medical personnel and arrested as he left ER. Donald S. Fishburn, 52, of Kentucky had an outstanding Kentucky arrest warrant for absconding parole supervision and leaving the state without permission.* His original charge was larceny.

Thursday, April 25: At 4:30 pm a probation officer requested assistance with a client at the jail. The officer assisted as requested.

Wednesday, April 24: At 7:29 am a complainant reported the theft of his wallet containing $120 cash. He reported he left it on the counter at Sparky’s. He returned and it was gone from the counter. He later found it on the road without his cash. The officer is investigating. At 4:49 pm an officer investigated a car-pedestrian accident in the 100 block of E. Lincoln Way. Teresa Johnson of Manning was westbound driving her 2003 Chevrolet Impala when she heard a loud bang on the rear side of her vehicle. A group of juveniles were playing hide and seek in the area. A female juvenile ran into the street and struck the rear side of the passing vehicle hard enough to dent it. The juvenile was checked by EMS, but was not transported. At 6:53 pm a traffic stop near S. Maple and W. South Sts resulted in the arrest of Carlos Recardo Gonzales of Dayton for driving while license barred- aggravated misdemeanor*. He was also cited for operation without registration.

Tuesday, April 23: At 2:18 pm in relation to a traffic related investigation a juvenile male was cited for no valid driver’s license and charged with interference with official acts*.

Monday, April 22: At 7:37 am a complainant reported a vehicle on the side of the road in the 1900 block of N. Wilson Ave. The officer checked on the driver of the vehicle and found they were asleep. The driver had become overtired and pulled to the side of the road to rest. At 3:23 pm while on patrol an officer located several pieces of lumber in the roadway near the intersection of N. Elm St and American Ave. The officer removed the debris and disposed of it. At 4:19 pm an officer assisted Jason Sheldahl on an active Greene County warrant for possession of a controlled substance- third offense and possession of drug paraphernalia*.

Sunday, April 21: At 7:52 pm an officer responded to a residence in the 500 block of S. Cedar St to locate a person known to have an active Boone County arrest warrant. The officer arrested the person and she was later transferred to Boone County.

Saturday, April 20: At 10:45 am a complainant reported a suspected fraud he had been involved with online. The officer is investigating. At 1:11 pm a complainant reported he had been assaulted while at a residence in Jefferson. The officer is investigating. At 8:35 pm an officer was dispatched to Cobblestone Hotel for a fire alarm activation. The officer responded and it was determined to be a false alarm.

Friday, April 19: At 12:04 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a patron on the property who was not allowed to be. The officer investigated the report. As a result of the investigation, Robert Vogel of Creston was charged with trespass – simple*. At 6:15 pm a complainant reported a suspected theft of property from her residence. The officer is investigating. At 8:16 pm an officer performed a traffic stop in the 1200 block of N. Elm St. As part of the stop the officer performed a consent search of the vehicle.  Suspected controlled substances were located during the search. The items were collected by the officer. The officer is investigating and charges are pending.

Thursday, April 18: At 1:56 pm a complainant reported possible neglect of a family member occurring in Jefferson. The case was referred to the Department of Human Services for further investigation.

Monday, April 15: At 9:58 pm Boone County law enforcement requested an officer to check a residence in Jefferson for someone who is wanted in Boone County. The subject was not located. At 6:22 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, April 14: At 3:21 pm a complainant caught a stray cat in the 100 block of W. Wilcoxway. The cat was placed in the Community Animal Shelter. At 6:06 pm an officer investigated an accident in the 1200 block of N. Elm St. Michelle Madsen of Jefferson was operating her 2015 Dodge Ram northbound on Elm in the outside lane. Caleb Henderson of Carroll was northbound in the inside lane, driving a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle owned by Patrick Henderson. Caleb Henderson attempted to turn right into the Fareway parking lot but struck the left front corner of Madsen’s vehicle. Henderson was cited for turning from improper lane. Damage to his motorcycle was estimated at $300. Damage to Madsen’s vehicle was estimated at $750. At 6:56 pm a complainant reported a stray cat had attacked her dog in the 500 block of E. Clark St. The officer offered her a live trap to attempt to catch the animal. At 7:20 pm  a complainant reported catching a stray dog in the 200 block of W. Gallop Rd. The dog was placed in the Community Animal Shelter.

Saturday, April 13: At 4:38 am an officer assisted a deputy on a traffic stop in the 200 block of Gallup Rd. At 9:25 am staff at HyVee reported a shoplifting event that had occurred 4/10. A female subject had not scanned all items in her cart and left without paying for $21 in items. The store was interested in pursuing criminal charges, but wished for the subject to be banned from the business. The officer located the female and banned her from returning to the property. At 1:50 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a disoriented female walking around the parking lot at 777 Wild Rose Lane. The officer made contact with the subject in the parking lot there. Jane Frances Ham, 75, of Boone was arrested and charged with public intoxication- simple misdemeanor*.

Friday, April 12: At 8:56 am a complainant reported possible harassment on Tic Tok. The officer advised there is no way to determine who is responsible for the posts and advised her to report it to Tic Tok.

Thursday, April 11: At 12:34 pm a complainant requested an officer to remove paraphernalia items she had located at a residence in the 200 block of E. Perry St. The officer took the items to be destroyed. At 8:03 pm a complainant reported juveniles missing with a sign in the 800 block of W. Lincoln Way. The juveniles had left the area before the officer’s arrival.

Wednesday, April 10: At 2:07 am Steve Dzuris requested to speak with an officer at a residence in the 700 block of N. Chestnut St. Dzuris advised the officer he need assistance with an alcohol problem. The officer transported Dzuris to ER to be seen by a doctor, but he eventually refused all care. Dzuris returned home and began calling again for officers at his residence. At About 5:01 am, Steven Logan Dzuris was arrested for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*.  At 8:32 am staff at Greene County Middle School requested a welfare check on a student who had been absent for five days and no one had called the school. As the officer was looking for the family, the student returned to school. He advised his family is in the process of moving out of the community. At 10:21 am a Jefferson mail carrier reported being bitten by a dog in the 400 block of E. Harrison St. The officer spoke to the owner of the animal and it was placed in a 10-day quarantine, per state law. The officer continues the investigation to determine which ordinance the dog had violated. At 12:06 a caller advised of being chased by a dog while bicycling in the 900 block of N. Grimmel Rd. The officer spoke to the owner of the animal about the animal leaving the owner’s property. The owner advised it will not happen in the future and understood the pertaining ordinances.

Tuesday, April 9: At 11:23 am an officer spotted a wanted male in a vehicle and performed a traffic stop near N. Elm and W. Reed Sts. Christian Michael O’Brien, 20, of Jefferson was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for fail to appear.* At 1:24 pm an officer was called to the 400 block of E. McKinley St for a loose dog which had attacked two other dogs in the neighborhood. The officer located the animal and its owner. The officer explained the city ordinance for this situation. The dog was deemed “Illegal” according to ordinance and has to leave the city. At 7:19 pm a complainant reported a possible violation of a no contact order that occurred by mail. The officer is investigating. At 8:12 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department at Casey’s. A vehicle was parked at the gas pumps and a small fire had started at the gas cap. The officer was able to extinguish the small flame with an extinguisher until fire arrived. No damage had occurred to the vehicle. It appeared the fumes coming from the fill tube had ignited by static electricity.

Monday, April 8: At 7:59 pm staff at Casey’s reported a shoplifting event at the store. A very young subject removed a pair of sunglasses from the store while shopping with his mother. The glasses were returned and no charges will be filed.

Sunday, April 7: At 2:17 am an officer performed a traffic stop just north of Hwy 30 on Hwy 4. A data check on the vehicle showed it had been stolen in Texas. The female driver gave the officer her name and date of birth, but later admitted it was a false name and provided her real information. The officer arrested Deidra Raedean Sheets, 60, of Gowrie for operation without owner’s consent (aggravated misdemeanor) and providing false information (simple misdemeanor)*. She was also cited for failure to have valid driver’s license.  At 4:26 pm a caller reported several gunshots coming from Daubendiek Park. The officer determined the gunfire was well outside of the city and passed the information to a deputy. At 4:37 pm a complainant reported finding two deceased cats near the brush pile at Daubendiek Park. The officer did not see any apparent signs of injuries and believed someone had dumped them there several weeks ago.

Saturday, April 6: At 6:26 am a complainant reported cows in the roadway in the 1300 block of S. Elm St. The owner arrived and took the cattle back to the fenced area. At 8:36 pm an officer investigated a report of a sex assault which occurred at a residence in the 300 block of N. Maple St.

Friday, April 5: At 1:39 am a complainant reported an unwanted female knocking on his door in the 200 block of S. High St. The officer transported the female across town to her vehicle. At 10:02 am a complainant reported a possible violation of a no contact order. The officer is investigating. At 11:05 am a complainant reported a broken window of a residence in the 400 block of S. Vine St. It appeared someone had gone through items inside, but nothing was missing. The officer believed the window had been shot with a BB gun. At 4:50 pm staff fromthe Department of Corrections requested a welfare check on a subject staying at Super 8. The officer located the subject and transported him to ER for an evaluation. At 7:59 pm a complainant requested a welfare check on a subject in the 200 block of S. Maple St. The officer spoke to the subject and transported them to ER to be evaluated.

Thursday, April 4: At 1:24 am law enforcement in Anoka County, MN, requested assistance from an officer in locating a Jefferson subject. The subject’s license plates had been stolen in Boone County and recovered in Minnesota. The officer made contact with the subject.

Wednesday, April 3: At 7:57 am an officer investigated an accident at E. Russell and S. Mulberry Sts. Janet Schrunk of Jefferson was eastbound in the 500 block of E. Russell driving her 2012 Jeep Compass. Erica Murphy of Panora was northbound on Mulberry driving her 2017 GMC Acadia. Murphy attempted to turn west onto Russell, but she turned too sharply and struck Schrunk’s vehicle. Murphy was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $2,000. At 10:46 am an officer assisted a deputy with an unruly subject at the courthouse. The subject left the building after speaking with the responding officers. At 3:52 pm an officer was requested at the middle school for a mutual fight between two students. After speaking to the subjects involved and their parents, it was decided to allow school staff to handle the situation rather than law enforcement.

Tuesday, April 2: At 3 am staff at The Gardens requested an officer’s help in locating a missing resident. Staff located the subject before the officer’s arrival. At 7:32 pm an officer checked on a FedEx truck parked in the 500 block of N. Vine St. The truck appeared to be empty and no one was located with the vehicle. FedEx was advised. At 9:09 pm a complainant reported subjects with flashlights near E. Harrison and S. Locust Sts. The officer did not locate anyone in the area. He later was advised subjects were looking for a lost pet.

Monday, April 1: At 9:31 am an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of E. Central Ave for a squirrel having bitten a person. The officer caught the squirrel and it will be sent in for rabies testing. At 9:44 am an officer was requested to assist the Department of Human Services with a child custody dispute in Jefferson. The officer assisted as requested. At 12:13 pm a complainant reported the attempted burglary to a vehicle in the 700 block of S. Chestnut St. The vehicle was locked and entry not gained. The officer is investigating.
