Activity Nights for families with young children coming to Extension office

Activities and family time combine for learning and fun in the Raising School Ready Readers program coming to Greene County Extension beginning April 30.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Greene County, Greene County Library Association are offering a series of family literacy activity nights for parents and children ages 3-6.

“We know parents with children this age often wonder how to get their child on a path to be successful in school and become a good reader,” says Rosa Gonzalez, who is a human sciences specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “We are excited to share this program because it helps busy parents discover simple ways to help turn everyday routines and experiences into learning opportunities for reading and writing skills.”

The Raising School Ready Readers program can help parents prepare their children to succeed in school and gain independence while having fun together as a family.

“The kids really love coming to the sessions because they play games and spend time with their parents, while parents are learning and practicing easy techniques to help their children become successful readers and writers,” says Gonzalez.

The five weekly sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays from April 30 – May 28. Each session will be from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Greene County Extension office. “We know families are busy, so our motto is come as often as you can and miss when you must. It’s still worth it even if you have to miss a session,” says Gonzalez.

“Join us for this fun program! Kids love the activities, parents love the information, and everyone loves the family time,” she added.

This program is free of charge, and a light supper will be provided. Funding for the  program is provided by Greene County Library Association and the Greene County board of supervisors. Families can register by calling 515-386-2138 or by contacting Lori Mannel at the Greene County Extension office at lmannel@iastate.edu.
