The inaugural season of Greene County bowling came to a close last week as neither team qualified for the state tournament.
The girls got the first go at qualifying for state, with a trip to Atlantic Feb. 12 to compete in the Class 1A District 7 meet. With the first place team advancing to the state competition, Greene County just missed, placing second behind Shenandoah.
Girls team scores: Shenandoah 2641; Greene County 1801; Lenox/Southwest Valley 1789; Creston 1741; Lamoni 1550; Mount Ayr 1325; West Central Valley 0.
February 13 was the boys’ qualifying chance, with Greene County taking sixth in the Class 2A District 3 meet at Statesmen Lanes in Oskaloosa. The top two teams, Marion and Keokuk, advanced to the state meet with the rest of the teams finishing their season.
Boys team scores: Marion 6183; Keokuk Chiefs 3205; Clinton 3136; Oskaloosa 3104; Burlington 2886; Greene County 2825; Norwalk 2608; Mt. Pleasant 2586.
Coach John Woodford led both teams for Greene County’s inaugural bowling season and is already looking forward to what the team can accomplish next year.
“The bowling season to me was a success. I enjoyed watching the girls become better bowlers. The girls had a bakers game of a 45. They got their bakers game average up to 100 a game,” said Woodford. “The boys, we had a strong performance all year. At districts, we had our chances but just couldn’t get a break. We won singles every week but two matches. Bakers games were our downfall. I believe we will have strong teams next year in both boys and girls. The experience will help.”
