Paul F. Bartley, 88, of Boone passed away at his home Thursday, January 11, 2024.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 17 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Interment will be at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery with military honors.
Paul was born December 28, 1935, in Jefferson, the son of Frank and Josephine (Fonken) Bartley.
He graduated from Jefferson High School, and then enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. On Sept. 14, 1957, he married Joy Iola Hedges at the United Methodist Church in Scranton. The family moved to Jefferson on June 28, 1959. Paul served in the Iowa National Guard for more than 20 years. He also worked at Pate and Paul gas station, and was a lifetime utility foreman with Iowa Electric/Alliant Energy.
Paul was an active coach in youth sports, a member of the city council, and volunteered countless hours planting and trimming trees for the local Johnny Appleseed group.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joy; parents; siblings Delores Dennhardt, Marvel Newell, Evelyn Leedom, Duane Bartley, Gail Bartley, Jean Wetzel, Frankey Anderson, and Rose Beaman.
Paul is survived by his daughter Lea Bartley of Ames; sons Nick Bartley of Boone and Lance (Shannon) Bartley of Harlan; grandchildren Ronika (Josh) Mann, Godric Garcia, Nicole Bartley, Kelsey Bartley, Nicholas Bartley, Macy Bartley, Jacob Bartley, and Brenden Bartley; great-grandchildren Bryant Garberding, Riley Anderson, Madi Mann, and Jaxson Mann; sisters-in-law Karen (Joe) Jackson, JoAnne (John) Smith, and Arlis Bartley; brother-in-law Dick Leedom; many nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, friends plant a tree in memory of Paul.
