All of Iowa is under a winter storm warning Thursday night through Friday. Highest accumulations of snow are expected over central Iowa, with 5-10 inches predicted through much of central Iowa.
Snowfall will begin over western Iowa late Thursday afternoon and then spread to the east. According to the National Weather Service, the likelihood of impactful weather conditions at 6 pm is 85 percent in Carroll and 70 percent in Ames.
Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph Friday will lead to significant blowing snow and near whiteout conditions at times later Friday into early Saturday. Blowing snow impacts will linger well beyond the end of falling snow, particularly in rural and open areas.
Hazardous travel is expected, particularly during the morning and evening commutes on Friday. Bitter cold temperatures will accompany this storm, adding an extra layer of risk to travel.
