University of Miami students, faculty coming to see caucus process
The political caucuses for the Democratic and Republican parties will be held in Greene County and across the state on Monday, Jan. 15, beginning at 7 pm.
The Democrats will meet in one location, Jefferson city hall, located at 220 N. Chestnut St.
The Republicans have six locations spread across the county. Jefferson 1 meets at the Greene County Elementary School while Jefferson 2 gathers at the Greene County courthouse. The Central precinct location is Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds in Jefferson.
The East precinct meets at the Grand Junction Community Center. North’s location is the Churdan Community Center. The Scranton Community Center will host the West precinct.
The Republican party will elect residents of the precinct to serve on the Greene County central committee; elect delegates and alternate delegates to the Greene County Republican convention and propose and vote on the platform to send to the county convention.
A special interest of both parties is the U.S. presidential race. Although it is not specifically mentioned, there is no doubt the topic will be discussed.
The Democrats plan to begin construction of the 2024 Greene County platform; elect unbound delegates and alternates to the county convention; elect precinct committee persons to the county central committee and identify candidates for public service at all levels, county, state and national.
From January 12-16, a group of Miami University (Ohio) faculty, students and staff will visit the greater Des Moines area to learn about the state’s first-in-the-nation party caucuses and their unique place in American politics. The group, consisting of 10 Miami University student leaders and five professors and staff, is taking part in a specially designed experiential learning program sponsored by Miami University’s Menard Family Center for Democracy.
The Iowa program, one of several off-campus learning opportunities the Menard Family Center is sponsoring in the 2024 presidential election year, is aimed at providing students with an up-close look at American politics ‘in action’ and a meaningful, high-impact opportunity to interact with local community leaders and discuss issues of public concern.
While in Iowa, the group will attend multiple candidate campaign rallies, meet state and local party leaders and community activists and visit Iowa’s state capital. On Caucus Day itself, the group will attend a specially designed half-day academic program hosted by Iowa State University (along with similar groups from the University of Alabama and Emerson College), meet with local leaders in Ames, attend a pre-caucus community dinner in Greene County and then watch Iowans participate in the 2024 caucuses in Jefferson.
“Greene County Democrats are excited to welcome the group from Miami (Ohio) University’s Center for Democracy on Iowa Caucus Day (January 15),” said Chris Henning of Cooper. “Iowa caucuses, regardless of party, are open to observers, and several of the group will be attending both Republican and Democratic Party caucuses scheduled at 7 pm in various locations.
“A bipartisan community supper is being planned at 5:30 pm at the Jefferson city hall, to introduce the group to registered Greene County Democrats and Republicans who will be participating in their respective caucuses later in the evening. RSVPs are appreciated for planning purposes; please text 515-370-2436 by January 14,” added Henning. ~courtesy of The Scranton Journal
