The Greene County bowling teams kicked off their season last week, with a Monday home meet, the girls falling and the boys finding a win, both against Clarke.
The girls team has six bowlers, with the boys having 22 from Greene County and one from Carroll. Many of the members on the boys team have plenty of bowling experience, having been in the junior bowling program at Spare Time Lanes in Jefferson. The program allows youngsters from ages eight to 18 to bowl on Saturdays at 10 a.m.
The team hosted Clarke Nov. 20 at Spare Time Lanes, with the girls falling 2080 to 1360 to the Indians. The boys saw more success, beating Clarke 2562 to 2540. Individual scores were not available.
In a meet, the six member team bowls two games of singles, each player bowling 10 frames per game under their own name. Following the two singles games, the team bowls five games of baker. The leadoff bowler bowls the first and sixth frames, the second bowler going in frames two and seven, the next going third and eighth, then another bowler taking frames four and nine, and the final bowler going in frames five and ten. The best bowler is typically the last to bowl.
The Rams’ coach, John Woodford, owner of Spare Time with his wife, Vickie, is just the right person to be coaching, with 45 years of bowling experience under his belt.
“I think it’s an exciting time to get [bowling] started and I’m looking forward to the season,” commented Coach Woodford.
The Rams hosted Ballard on Monday, with the boys winning 2712 to 2536. Senior Carter Fecher rolled the high game for the Rams with a 247.
The girls lost to Ballard, 1909 to 1497. Senior Graci Cooklin had high game with 128.
The Rams will go to Osceola Saturday for the Baker Tournament hosted by Clarke. Lenox/Southwest Valley and Mount Ayr will fill out the four team tournament. ~with Taylor Teays for The Scranton Journal
