School board candidates will be announced Friday
Incumbent Jefferson mayor Matt Gordon is not running for re-election. Former mayor Craig Berry is the only candidate who filed nominating papers for the position. The filing deadline was Sept. 21.
Gordon had been on the Jefferson city council for two years when he successfully ran against incumbent mayor Berry in 2020. Berry had been mayor for 12 years before Gordon ousted him. He was on the city council for 19 years before becoming mayor.
Incumbent city council member Dave Sloan is not running for re-election. Candidates for two council seats are incumbent Matt Wetrich, Susan K. Bose, Chad Sloan and Trevor Wishman.
Four candidates are vying for three positions on the Paton city council – incumbents Jacob Bohnet and Chris Sprecher, and Jimmy Martin and Paul Subbert. Mayor Steve Burrell is unopposed.
There’s also a contest for Scranton city council. Voters will select three council members from among incumbent Ashley Squibb, Gale G. Zellweger and Nici Teeters Thomas. One person, Annette Brown, is on the ballot to fill a vacancy. Brown has been appointed to the vacancy (until the next election, the Nov. 7 election). If elected, her term will end in two years, whereas the other council candidates will serve a full four-year term. Mayor Jerry Boyd is running unopposed.
In Rippey, Malachi M. Meri is challenging incumbent mayor Daniel Brubaker. With three terms expiring on the city council, only two names will be on the ballot – Bobbi Dollinger, who was appointed to fill a vacancy, and Shannon Lawrence.
Churdan mayor Joleen Killeen is running unopposed. Voters will elect three council persons, with incumbent Colton Morlan on the ballot along with Nicholas Christianson and Dennis Smidt.
Dean Lyons is running unopposed to be mayor of Grand Junction. Incumbent Spencer Kirk and Tom Launderville are running for two council positions.
Dana mayor Mandy Sims and incumbent council member Kellie Madison are both running unopposed.
Names of candidates for the Greene County and Paton-Churdan school boards have not been reported to the county auditor.
Also on the Nov. 7 ballot will be a referendum seeking approval of a $10 million general obligation bond issue for the construction of a new Greene County jail. The referendum must receive at least 60 percent voter approval to pass.
