Used book sale at Jefferson library Sept. 15-23

Annual Friends of the Library fundraiser

The annual Friends of the Jefferson Public Library Used Book Sale begins Friday, Sept. 15, at 1 pm in the library basement.

Friday is open for Friends members only. Memberships may be purchased now at the library or at the door for a cost of $5 for individual and $10 for family. Beginning Saturday, Sept. 16, the sale is open to the public.

The sale features books for all ages, in addition to DVD movies, music CD’s, audio books, board games, and jigsaw puzzles. For sale is a combination of donated items and those withdrawn from the library collection, including a huge selection of non-fiction books for both children and adults and large print fiction books.

Sale hours are Fridays from 1 to 5 pm, Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 6 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 6 pm.

Bargain Day, the final day of the sale, is Saturday, Sept. 23. A brown grocery bag may be filled to the top for only $5. Books without a price tag may go in the bag. “Best Books” and items that are individually priced are sold at half price.

The Fall Book Sale is the major fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, along with the annual membership drive. This is the time to join the Friends or renew your membership. The fall newsletters have been emaile,d including a convenient membership form to fill out and mail or bring into the Library. Persons who have not received a newsletter via email can ask for a printed copy at the library circulation desk.

The fall book sale is the one time of year when the Friends ask for membership support in the Friends of the Library. In the past year, the books sales and memberships together were able to purchase many new items for the library including an After-Mouse play touch table, outdoor concrete picnic table, young adult bookshelf, and a new Kodak photo printing kiosk.

The Friends also sponsored the summer and winter reading programs and the library’s participation in community events such as the Bell Tower Festival parade, Trick or Treat Around the Square, RAGBRAI® and the Back to School Breakfast for the Greene County teachers and staff.  The Friends also provided funding support for Tumblebooks, an interactive resource full of books, games and puzzles for children, and for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which sends enrolled children ages birth to 5 years one book each month.

“We invite everyone to come to the book sale and support your local library by becoming a Friend of the Library,” a Friends of the Library spokesperson said. “Together, we can do so much to encourage reading and learning for all ages.”
