Marianne Carlson, unofficially winner of more Iowa State Fair foods contests than any other Greene County resident, added to her honors a first place win and a $200 cash award in the North “40” pie contest judged Aug. 13 at the fair. Entrants were tasked with creating an award-winning two-crust pie that did not use canned pie filling. Pies were judged on flavor and appearance.
She earned second place overall and a $75 gift card in the Bob’s Red Mill Yeast Rolls competition judged Aug. 17. She tied with another baker for Reserve Sweepstakes. Carlson placed first in potato pan rolls and whole wheat (one-half whole wheat) pan rolls; second in hamburger buns and white pan rolls; and third in sweet rolls other than named.
The same day she earned top honors in the My Favorite Ice Cream Topping contest in the Other Toppings class. She received $100 with the honor. Entries were judged on originality, taste and presentation.
Carlson ventured into a new realm and won first place in the Getting Lean on Keto competition judged Aug. 17. Competitors were asked to create an appetizer, side dish or main dish that adheres to ketogenic diet rules. Entries were judged on taste, presentation, adherence to Keto and originality.
