Sheriff’s report – August 2023

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, Aug. 31: At 4:41 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire department, and Greene County Ambulance assisted the Jefferson police department with an accident investigation involving a car and a school bus at the intersection of Locust St and W. Lincoln Way in Jefferson. At 7:59 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 1300 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township.

Wednesday, Aug. 30: At 8 am the sheriff, a deputy, Iowa State Patrol, Jefferson fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident on Hwy 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Tuesday, Aug. 29: At 1:49 am a deputy investigated a threat in the 2200 block of Hwy 4 in Franklin Township At 4:46 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 9:59 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an underage party in the 400 block of Harding St. Several people fled from the scene; the rest were of legal drinking age.

Monday, Aug. 28: At 6:42 pm a deputy picked up a found bike in the 1000 block of Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 11:01 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 400 block of S. 12th St in Grand Junction. At 11:40 pm a deputy assisted the Clarke County sheriff’s office with locating a runaway. The runaway was found in the 300 block of W. State St in Jefferson.

Sunday, Aug. 27: At 3:57 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an emu running at large in the 1600 block of 320th St in Greenbrier Township.

Saturday, Aug. 26: At 2:51 am a deputy investigated a manure spill on O Ave near 295th St in Franklin Township. The DNR is handling the spill. At 10:09 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order by an inmate in the jail.

Friday, Aug. 25: At 2:58 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a manure spreader fire on Hwy 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson. The brakes on the spreader had gotten hot and caught fire. There was minor damage done to the implement. At 10:56 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 1100 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Thursday, Aug. 24: At 12:51 pm a deputy investigated a scam in the 2200 block of W Ave in Washington Township. At 8:52 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a road hazard on 237th St near Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson.

Wednesday, Aug. 23: At 12:33 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run backing accident in the 900 block of Locust St in Scranton. An unknown white vehicle backed into a parked 1995 Ford F-150. The estimated damage to the Ford is $750. At 1:34 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Hwy 30 near Eaton Ave just east of Scranton. Beth Eischeid, 62, of Carroll was eastbound driving a 2017 Buick Envision. She stopped at a construction zone. Noah Rusch, 24, of Altoona was also eastbound driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan. He failed to stop and struck the rear of Eischeid’s vehicle. There were no injuries. Rusch was cited for failure to stop in a safe and clear distance. Damage to his minivan was estimated at $5,000; the vehicle was towed from the scene. Damage to Eischeid’s vehicle was also estimated at $5,000. At 8:10 pm a deputy investigated a vehicle abandoned in a bean field on 130th St at S Ave in Dawson Township. The driver of the vehicle was not located.

Tuesday, Aug. 22: At 7:39 pm the sheriff, deputies, and Grand Junction fire searched for a child missing from the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. The child was located at 9:16 pm.

Monday, Aug. 21: At 6:05 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Hwy 4 near 257th St south of Jefferson. Sydney Crnkovich, 29, of Dedham struck a deer with a 2021 Buick Envision. The estimated damage to the vehicle was $7,000. At 10:50 am the sheriff investigated a possible spill on O Ave near 295th St in Franklin Township. The DNR was called to investigate. At 11:50 am a deputy assisted with trying to locate the owner of an emu that is running at large on 320th St near U Ave in Washington Township. At 1:50 pm a deputy attempted to locate the emu that was seen in the 1900 block of 318th St in Washington Township. At 2:38 pm the Greene County sheriff‘s office conducted a search warrant at 741 S Ave in Junction Township. Firearm accessories and ammo were seized. At 5:29 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 1000 block of State St in Scranton.

Sunday, Aug. 20: At 8:22 am a deputy assisted the Webster County sheriff’s office with a complaint of trespass in the 1700 block of 390th St. At 7:40 pm a deputy assisted a DNR officer with a medical call at Squirrell Hollow Park. At 10:02 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest.

Saturday, Aug. 19: At 12:10 am a deputy assisted Guthrie County deputies with locating a vehicle in the 300 block of Jay St in Churdan. At 2:03 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 7:08 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 6:32 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on N Ave near 120th St in Dawson Township. Logan Reed, 21, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2012 Nissan Maxima, causing an estimated $2,500 damage to the vehicle.

Friday, Aug. 18: At 7:56 pm a deputy arrested Melissa Rysavy, 27, of Scranton for a Boone County arrest warrant for harassment- first degree*.

Thursday, Aug. 17: At 2:36 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Aug. 16: At 12:57 am a deputy arrested Melissa Rysavy, 27, of Scranton for public intoxication*. At 12:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of child neglect in Paton. At 9:43 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office, Iowa State Patrol, Carroll EMS, Glidden fire, and the Carroll County sheriff’s office responded to a motorcycle accident on 250th St near A Ave in Scranton Township. The Iowa State Patrol investigated the accident.

Tuesday, Aug. 15: At 10:33 am a deputy investigated a missing person complaint that was from Webster County. The person was later located.

Monday, Aug. 14: At 9:57 am a deputy attempted to find reported cattle near the roadway on U Avenue near 240th St at Grand Junction. At 1:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 200 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. At 5:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton.

Sunday, Aug. 13: At 2:17 am a deputy investigated a probation violation in the 700 block of Walnut St in Grand Junction. At 12:11 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 1200 block of S. Main St in Scranton. At 11:15 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on W Ave near 210th St in Junction Township. Madilyn Van Pelt, 20, of Grand Junction lost control of a 2020 Ford Explorer. The vehicle rolled into the west ditch. There were no injuries. Damage to the vehicle exceeded value.  totaling the vehicle.

Saturday, Aug. 12: At 4:01 pm a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with locating a vehicle in Grand Junction that was involved in a hit and run accident on Boxholm. At 7:19 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 600 block of 13th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Aug. 10: At 2:33 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 700 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Wednesday, Aug. 9: At 12:04 am a deputy investigated a report of a probation violation in Scranton. At 6:27 am a deputy located a vehicle stolen out of Des Moines in the 100 block of W. 3rd St in Rippey. Nathan Pote, 32, homeless, was arrested for operation without owners’ consent, theft- first degree, possession of a controlled substance- second offense, and driving while license revoked, denied, or suspended*. At 8:50 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant in the 500 block of S. Chestnut St in Jefferson. At 7:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an oil spill on S Avenue near 200th St in Junction Township. Secondary roads dealt with the oil spill.

Tuesday, Aug. 8: At 7:32 am the sheriff’s office, assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and a DCI agent, conducted a search warrant at 207 Stream St in Farlin. Suspected controlled substances, drug paraphernalia, and several firearms were seized. Charges are pending lab results. At 7:35 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a company removing shingles from the wrong house in the 800 block of C Ave in Bristol Township. The company agreed to replace the roof as they had the wrong house. At 7:36 am the sheriff’s office, assisted by the Iowa State Patrol and the Jefferson PD, conducted a search warrant at 300 E. State St, Jefferson. Suspected controlled substances and drug paraphernalia were seized. Charges are pending lab results. At 11:17 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of Head St in Churdan. At 4:47 pm the sheriff’s office conducted a search warrant at 741 S Ave in Hardin Township. Suspected controlled substances were seized. Charges are pending lab results.

Monday, Aug. 7: At 11:03 am a deputy, Scranton fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident on 320th St and D Ave in Willow Township. Jason Dorr, 26, of Bagley was northbound on D Ave driving a 1993 Chevrolet 1500. Lee Arnold, 52, of Coon Rapids was eastbound on 320th St driving a 2023 Chevrolet 2500 when he pulled out in front of Dorr. One driver was taken to St Anthony Hospital in Carroll by a family member. Dorr was cited for failure to provide financial liability. Damage to his pickup truck was estimated at $6,000. Damage to Arnold’s truck was estimated at $12,000. At 3:03 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of N. 5th St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Aug. 5: At 11:08 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of Bell St in Churdan. At 1:31 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of Anyer St in Dana.

Friday, Aug. 4: Routine activity reported.

Thursday, Aug. 3: At 5:50 pm a deputy, Greene County Ambulance and Grand Junction fire and rescue responded to an ATV accident in the 900 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Colton Bishop, 27, of Des Moines lost control of a 2023 Kawasaki ATV and rolled it. Bishop admitted to consuming alcohol. Charges are pending lab results. He was transported with minor injuries to the Greene County Medical Center. The ATV had an estimated $1,500 damage.

Wednesday, Aug. 2: At 8:09 am a deputy located two dogs running at large in the 700 block of Sand St in Churdan. They were returned to their home. At 5:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction. At 7:30 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with an arrest.

Tuesday, Aug. 1: At 12:21 am a deputy investigated a possible probation violation in  Scranton. At 7:58 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large in the 1000 block of State St in Scranton. At 9:19 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Scranton.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
