Visitation with the family of Harold Osterman, 95, of Grand Junction will be held Monday, July 3, at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Words of comfort will be offered by hospice chaplain Denise Lindemann of St Croix Hospice in Humboldt.
A private family interment will be held at a later date at the Junction Township Cemetery. A United States Army honor guard will provide military honors.
Harold Addison Osterman (HO), a devoted family man, veteran, and avid collector, passed away on June 28, 2023, at age 95. Born April 23, 1928, to Walter and Hazel (Shaffer) Osterman, Harold lived a rich and fulfilling life surrounded by his loved ones.
On June 3, 1956, Harold married the love of his life, Alta Fay Foltz, and together they built a beautiful family. Their union was blessed with five daughters: Carol (Jesse Krueger) Morlan of Adel, Sandy (Phillip) Dennis of Denison, TX, Lori (Steve) Kennedy of Grand Junction, Shirley (Trent) Fichter of Roland, and Kathy (Jeff) Welch of Boone. Harold is also survived by his two sisters: Aurelia Scott of Le Mars, and Evelyn (Mike) Ingraham of Tacoma, WA.
Harold was a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren: David (Whitney) Schlicht, Jeremy (Jaime) Kennedy, Kelly Allison, Derek (Adrienne) Kennedy, Justin (Lisa) Ott, Tyler (Dolly) Vivyan, Sheena Kennedy, Jennifer (Dusty) Farnsworth, Jared (Jessica) Vivyan, Jessi (Michael) Larson, Spencer (Karissa) Welch, and Danielle (Brett) Koster. He was further blessed with 30 great-grandchildren, as well as great-great-grandchildren. Harold’s love for his family extended to his relatives and friends, who will cherish his memory.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Alta Osterman; his parents Walter and Hazel Osterman; and his brother-in-law Leon Scott.
One of Harold’s greatest passions was farming, and he dedicated his life to building a prosperous and fulfilling existence in the agricultural world. From a young age, Harold developed a deep appreciation for the land and the bountiful rewards it could yield. Following in the footsteps of his parents Walter and Hazel, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for the soil, Harold embraced farming as a way of life.
Having served during the Korean War in the US Army, Harold was a dedicated veteran who courageously defended his country. His commitment to his service was admirable and deeply respected.
Harold had a variety of passions and hobbies that brought him joy throughout his life. An avid collector, he found great delight in his extensive train collection. Setting up the trains in his house was a cherished activity that allowed him to share his passion with his family. He was also a passionate rock hunter, always on the lookout for unique and fascinating geological treasures.
Additionally, Harold was keenly interested in collecting coins and stamps, finding value in their historical significance and beauty. He found solace and fulfillment in pursuing these hobbies.
Known for his love of nature and animals, Harold would often bring wild creatures into the house to share with his children and grandchildren. His compassion for all living beings knew no bounds, and he imparted this appreciation onto his family, instilling a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world.
Among Harold’s fondest memories were the 4th of July celebrations, when he would enthusiastically set off fireworks for all to enjoy. His love for the spectacle and excitement of fireworks was contagious, and he made sure to create lasting memories for his loved ones.
Harold’s kind and nurturing spirit extended to his love for being outdoors with his children. He relished in the simple joys of nature. He embraced the wonder and curiosity that accompanied each adventure—these cherished moments created lasting bonds and memories that his family will treasure.
Harold Osterman will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his country, and his passion for collecting and appreciating the beauty of the world around him. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, joy, and cherished memories that will forever be held dear in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
