All Iowans who are age 65 or older as of Jan. 1, 2023, are reminded that they’re now eligible for a homestead tax exemption of $3,250 for the current assessment year, but they must sign up for the exemption in person at the county assessor’s office before July 1.
The Greene County assessor’s office is located on the first floor of the courthouse, right inside the handicap accessible east entrance. The application process is very simple and applicants will be assisted by the assessor’s office staff.
The new exemption was approved as House File 718 in the 2023 Iowa legislative session.
The exemption is a reduction in the taxable value of a home, not a direct reduction in the property tax bill.
The exemption increases to $6,500 effective Jan. 1, 2024.
