Nola Jean Clipperton Wilson, older of two children, was born to W. Guy and Audrey Mumby Clipperton on March 8, 1930, at her grandfather’s house on a farm southwest of Churdan. She attended Bristol Township School #2 for eight years before the family moved to Churdan in 1946 due to the death of her father when she was 16 years old. Nola graduated from Churdan High School in 1947 and went on to attend Fort Dodge Beauty Academy. Following this, she opened Nola’s Beauty Shop in Churdan, where she worked for three years.
On Dec. 1, 1951, Nola married Merle Wilson at the Methodist Church in Churdan and they subsequently established their home in Dawson Township, rural Paton. Three boys, Donald Merle, Steven Dale and Jerry Dean were born to this union. In addition to raising their three boys and helping on the farm, Nola also worked as a beautician at long term care in Jefferson for a number of years. She also managed to find time to make cakes for special occasions.
Community and her faith were very important to her, as demonstrated by her involvement with the church and numerous clubs. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, first in Paton, and then Jefferson following their retirement from farming in 1994. Always one to keep busy, Nola participated in a wide range of activities, some of which include: P.E.O., Questers, United Methodist Women, Stitch-n-Chat, Happy Hour, Garden Club, Ingleside Club and Meals on Wheels.
For several years, Nola and Merle enjoyed spending winter in Mesa, AZ, where they were very active in the retirement community. Additionally, Nola was a big Iowa State basketball fan and was always thrilled to get season tickets so she could cheer on the Cyclones.
Always the doting grandmother, Nola enjoyed time with her grandchildren Matthew, Cori, Nathan and Justin, and went to countless ball games, dance recitals, county fairs, and even made the journey to London, England to visit her granddaughter.
Nola passed away at Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone on Sunday June 11, 2023, at the age of 93. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband Merle.
She is survived by her sons Don Wilson of Paton, Steven (Janet) Wilson of Boone, and Jerry (Mary) Wilson of Jefferson; her sister Joyce (Cecil) Hoyle of Churdan; grandchildren Matthew (Ashley) Wilson of Albia, Cori (Mike) Smee of London, England, Nathan Wilson of Ames, and Justin Wilson of Wheatland, WY; great- grandchildren Elizabeth and William Smee of London and Huxley Wilson of Albia. She was also close to her cousins and a proud aunt to her nieces and nephews.
Nola was compassionate, generous and kind. Her absence leaves an ache in our hearts, but we were blessed to know and love her. She will be sorely missed. Memorials in her honor are suggested to Hospice of the Midwest.
The family is assisted by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home, Jefferson.
