Sheriff’s report – May 2023

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, May 31: At 4:25 pm deputies investigated a complaint of an illegal burial at the Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan. An urn with cremains was found buried with flags that said Grandma and Grandpa.  At 7:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an intoxicated male assaulting a dog in the 1000 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. Christopher Lehrkamp, 36, of Scranton was arrested for public intoxication and animal abuse*.

Tuesday, May 30: At 4:21 pm the sheriff assisted with traffic control for a combine that was disabled on Hwy 30 near T Ave west of Grand Junction. At 10:34 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a possible stolen vehicle in the 800 block of S. Chestnut St.        

Monday, May 29: At 2 pm a deputy, Churdan fire and rescue, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a single-vehicle accident in the 200 block of 130th St in Cedar Township. Kurt Burns, 59, of Churdan suffered a medical emergency and lost control of his 2013 Dodge Ram pickup truck and entered the ditch. The 2013 Dodge Ram was a total loss after it caught fire. Dennis Kraft of Boone noticed the vehicle on fire and aided in getting the driver out of the vehicle. Greene County Ambulance transported Burns to Greene County Medical Center.

Sunday, May 28: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, May 27: At 2:58 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an unruly patron at 209 Main in Paton. At 5:15 pm the sheriff and deputies conducted a search of a vehicle at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Suspected marijuana and marijuana-infused gummies were located and seized. Charges are pending lab results.

Friday, May 26: At 11:24 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief on W. Main St and 5th St in Grand Junction. At 6:21 pm deputies, Jefferson fire, Greene County Ambulance, and Grand Junction fire responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of S. Maple St in Jefferson. The garage was a total loss with some damage to the house. There were two trucks that were also a total loss.

Thursday, May 25: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, May 24: At 7:57 pm a deputy arrested Zein Ibrahim, 35, of Harcourt on arrest warrants for harassment- third degree, stalking, and a violation of a protective order*. At 8:43 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 2100 block of P Ave in Franklin Township.

Tuesday, May 23: At 9:26 am a deputy investigated a complaint of furniture blocking an alley in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 2:07 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an aggressive dog in the 800 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 11:35 pm a deputy investigated a probation violation in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton.

Monday, May 22: At 1:22 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton. At 7:50 am a deputy investigated a complaint of dogs fighting in the 600 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. At 9:58 am a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 500 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction. At 2:56 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop near the 100 block of Ram Drive. Mitchell Venteicher, 38, of Jefferson was arrested for driving while license barred*. At 9:40 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Madison St at State St in Scranton. Wayne Royer, 42, of Scranton was arrested for driving while license revoked*.

Saturday, May 20: At 10:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 11:39 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a violation of probation in the 700 block of Walnut St Scranton.

Friday, May 19: At 10 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 200 block of S. 6th St in Grand Junction. At 3:45 pm a deputy, Scranton Fire, Coon Rapids Fire, and Bayard Fire responded to a structure fire in the 2300 block of Highway 25 in Willow Township. A garage and a truck were lost in the fire. The cause of the fire in unknown. At 4:03 pm a deputy investigated a reported theft in the 800 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Thursday, May 18: At 4:34 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Hwy 30 near H Ave west of Jefferson. Noah Winkleman, 34, of Jefferson was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated*.  At 5:05 pm a deputy investigated a school bus violation on Third St and Main St in Rippey. At 6:07 pm a deputy arrested Julie Wells, 56, of Glidden and Larry Simms, 60, of Carroll for arrest warrants for burglary- third degree and theft- second degree*.

Wednesday, May 17: At 7:21 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 700 block of 240th St in Jackson Township. At 9:45 pm a deputy and the DNR assisted with a stranded boater near the pipeline river access in Washington Township

Monday, May 15: At 7:05 pm a deputy assisted with a cow out on J Avenue near 290th St in Greenbrier Township. At 9:24 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 200 block of I Ave in Highland Township. At 10:19 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Hwy 30 and S Ave west of Grand Junction. David Niehaus, 54, of Carroll struck a deer with a Nissan Titan, causing an estimated $2,000 damage to the vehicle.

Sunday, May 14: At 3:07 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 150th St near Colonial Ave in Cedar Township. Kenneth Bonnette, of Scranton struck a bridge with a 2004 GMC Sierra. Bonnette was cited for open container of alcohol in vehicle, no valid driver’s license, and failure to prove financial liability. Damage to his vehicle exceeded value. The bridge was not damaged.  

Saturday, May 13: At 1:49 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on 190th St and K Ave in Bristol Township. Jonathan Law, 39, of Churdan struck a deer with a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle. Law was arrested for operating while intoxicated- second offense*.  At 1:02 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near J Ave west of Jefferson. Shawn Vanbriggle of Indiana was westbound on Highway 30 operating a 2013 Ford F-150. He was following Allen Brown of Ainsworth, who was driving a 2023 Nissan Altima. Brown stopped to turn left into a driveway and Vanbriggle struck the rear of Brown’s vehicle. Damage to Brown’s vehicle was estimated at $10,000. Damage to Vanbriggle’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. At 2:46 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 700 block of Glenwood Ave in Bristol Township. At 6:46 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 700 block of Main St in Scranton.

Friday, May 12: At 9:11 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Thursday, May 11: At 5:05 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 144 near 270th St in Washington Township. At 6:51 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment on 130th St near Highway 144 near Paton.

Wednesday, May 10: At 6:27 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on Highway 30 near Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson. At 6:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a horse tied up in the 500 block of State St in Scranton.

Tuesday, May 9: At 12:50 pm a deputy, Scranton fire, Ralston fire, and Glidden fire departments responded to a barn fire in the 1100 block of C Ave in Scranton Township. The barn was a total loss. The cause of the fire was a controlled burn the subject thought was out. At 4:27 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 200 block of North St in Dana.

Monday, May 8: At 1:49 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office conducted a search warrant n the 300 block of N. Walnut St in Carroll with the assistance of the Carroll police department. Suspected controlled substances and drug paraphernalia were located. Charges are pending lab results.

Sunday, May 7: At 11:02 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 600 block of V Ave in Paton Township. At 12:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of bones being found in a back yard garden in the 600 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. The bones were chew bones for dogs. At 7:08 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 200 block of Park St in Paton.

Saturday, May 6: At 1:25 am a deputy assisted with a malfunctioning railroad crossing on Main St in Paton. At 10:02 am a deputy investigated a complaint of identity theft in the 2300 block of U Ave in Washington Township. At 5:21 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 800 block of B Ave in Scranton Township. At 7:15 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1200 block of 245th St in Jackson Township.

Friday, May 5: At 5:40 pm a deputy assisted DHS with locating a child in Grand Junction. At 10:47 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 11:42 pm a deputy assisted with locating a child in the 200 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, May 4: At 4:46 am a deputy and Churdan fire responded to an out-of-control illegal burn in the 300 block of C Ave in Cedar Township. At 5:41 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 200 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. Randolph Glass, 57, of Rippey was arrested on a warrant for probation violation*. At 9:59 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 500 block of Cartwright St in Rippey.

Wednesday, May 3: At 8 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a person on an electric scooter pulling kids in a wagon on Main St in Grand Junction. At 10:33 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a tree service cutting a tree down that fell on a house in the 400 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 3 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire, and Scranton fire responded to a field fire that was intentionally set and got out of control on 280th Street and G Ave in Jackson Township. At 6:09 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an illegal burn in the 300 block of U Ave in Paton Township. At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an illegal burn in the 1800 block of 130th St in Dawson Township. At 8:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 2300 block of E Ave in Willow Township. At 8:51 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an illegal burn in the 200 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, May 2: At 3 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass at the Grand Junction city dump. At 9 am a deputy assisted the city of Churdan with municipal infractions. At 6:37 pm a deputy and Jefferson fire responded to a field fire in the 1500 block of K Ave in Jackson Township.

Monday, May 1: At 5:59 pm a deputy assisted with a tractor that had slid into the ditch on Q Ave near 120th St in Dawson Township. The operator of the tractor was not named in the sheriff’s release. There was no damage to the tractor. The cause was the shoulder of the roadway caved in, causing the tractor to slide into the ditch.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
