Paton-Churdan holds scholarship/mentor recognition event

Paton-Churdan High School held its annual banquet celebrating the mentors and accomplishments of the graduating class of 2023 Wednesday, May 17, at the Loren Shriver Community Center in Paton. Community State Bank and United Bank of Iowa- Churdan sponsored the event, which included a catered meal for all in attendance.

Scholarships and other awards were presented.

Greene County Cattlemen scholarships, Jacob Brus, Autumn Consier, Bailey Anderson, presented by Patrick Minnehan
Greene County Peace Officers Association, Dick Pauley and Wild Rose Casino scholarship, Autumn Consier, presented by Jack William, Dick Pauley and Tom Heater
Lyle Graue Scholarship, Shaydon Thurman, Bailey Anderson, Autumn Consier, presented by Libby Towers
American Legion Auxiliary and Phyllis Wiederin Memorial Scholarship, Shaydon Thurman, Bailey Anderson, Tarynn Fisher and Autumn Consier, presented by Marty Hennesy
Iowa Central Community College work-based learning scholarship recipients, all of whom completed at least one pathway at the Greene County Career Academy, Bailey Anderson, Shaydon Thurman, Jacob Brus, Kyann Fowler, Paige Teeples and Gretchen Davis (not pictured), presented by Teresa Green. Additionally, Kyann Fowler received a blue cord for completing the health care strand.

Each graduating senior also wrote a 500-word essay about someone who had been a mentor for them. They read their essays at the banquet and honored their mentor with a certificate. Graduate Gretchen Davis was unable to attend the program. Her mentor was Diana Smith. Davis completed all available courses at the Career Academy and has already started an accelerated program at Mercy College of Nursing that will allow her to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing in May 2024.
