Video gaming topic of first Coffee Chat series at Jamaica public library

The Jamaica public library will host the first in a series of Saturday morning “Coffee Chats” Saturday, May 20, at 10:30 am in the library meeting room. The first Coffee Chat will be “When Is Gaming More Than Just a Hobby?” to be presented by Dorinda Wehde, M.S., C.A.D.C., a problem gaming counselor with New Opportunities.

Wehde, based in the New Opportunities office in Carroll, has developed a comprehensive program, Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment Services, for residents of the five counties served by New Opportunities—Guthrie, Greene, Audubon, Sac and Carroll.

Wehde will help define the term “gaming disorder.” “We will discuss the similarities between video gaming and gambling,” she explains. “We will learn how video game developers design games to be addictive. Do you know what a ‘loot box’ is?”

The presentation will help identify symptoms of problem gambling. “Learn how to identify gambling-related lifestyle changes,” said Wehde. “Learn to understand the risks associated with gambling.”

“When Is Gaming More Than Just a Hobby” is presented to the public at no charge. The program will last one hour and include time for follow-up questions.

This initial Coffee Chat and all others to be presented in the months ahead will offer complimentary coffee and cookies. Persons who want more information can contact the library at 641-429-3362 or check the Jamaica Public Library Facebook page.
