Morton competes in first decath of season, hits career-best in three events

UNI track and field wrapped up an active four-meet weekend late Saturday night as Panther Carter Morton, a Greene County high school graduate, competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational on the Azusa Pacific University campus.

Morton, the Most Valuable Athlete from February’s Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Indoor Championships, competed in his first decathlon of the outdoor season beginning on Thursday at Cougar Athletic Stadium.

The Panther junior recorded career-best marks in three of the decathlon’s 10 events, including the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.05 seconds, the discus with a toss of 33.67 meters and the javelin, recording a throw of 53.28 meters. Morton also topped Group A in the high jump with a leap of 2.01 meters. 

Taking sixth place in Group A, Morton finished the multi-event competition with a career-best 7,210 points, surpassing his previous high-water mark by 238 points and passing 7,000 points for the first time in his career.
