The Greene County girls track and field team placed third of 10 teams and the boys placed fifth of 10 teams at the Carroll CoEd track and field meet held April 10 at the Carroll athletic field.
The track portion of the meet began with sprint medley relays for the girls. The senior relay team of Katrina Heupel, Isabella Schroeder, Kamryn Sanders and Natalie Heupel was edged out of first place by the Carroll team, but they ran their season best time of 1:56.35 which, according to coach Derek Merk, puts them in 9th place in Class 2A. An all-freshman sprint med relay team of Addison Gannon, Lila Osterson, Savannah Lansman and Kaycee Pittman placed fourth in 2:02.76.
The 4 X 100m and 4 X 200m relay teams both placed first. Shannon, Sanders, N. Heupel and K. Heupel clocked the 4 X 100 in 51.60, and the 4 X 200 in 1:48.99. Both are season best times and in the Top 5 best times in Class 2A. As of Tuesday morning, the 4 X 200 was in the Top 24 in all classes, according to Merk.
Gannon, Kaylee Stalder, Alexa Peters and Schroeder placed fifth in the 4 X 100 with a time of 55.98.
“The incredible relay performances were capped with a near-school record time in the 4 X 400,” Merk said. N. Heupel, K. Heupel, Kaycee Pittman and Olivia Shannon finished second to Carroll with a time of 4:15. That’s the second best time recorded since 2011 for a Rams 4 X 400 squad, and the quartet is ranked third in Class 2A and 25th in all classes.
The 4 X 100m shuttle hurdle relay of Schroeder, Peters, Gretah Kersey and Veronica Van der Meer claimed fourth place with a time of 1:19.53.
Gretah Kersey placed sixth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 19.01.
In field events, Emma Hoyle placed second in discus with a throw of 99-00. Teammate Emma Ewalt was third with a throw of 95-02. In shot put, Daniele Madsen placed fourth with a throw of 33-02.00, followed by Ashlynn Hinners with a throw of 31-04.50 and Hoyle at 31-03.00.
Shannon placed second in the long jump with a leap of 16-01.00, with Sanders in third place at 15-02.00 and Lansman in fifth place with 14-07.00. Osterson set the bar for the Rams in the high jump at 4-06.00, good for sixth place.
Coach Merk credited the coaches in the field events for the athletes’ continued success. Coaches are Pat Gerhardt in long jump, Andy Carman and Doug Carman in shot/discus, and Dean Lyons in high jump. The successes “speak to the quality of coaches we have and the ability of the girls to put their trust in those coaches and continue putting in an emphasis on fine-tuning their techniques in those events,” Merk said.
He also gave a “shout out” to Caden Duncan for creating a strength training program for track and field athletes.
