Is your organization planning to serve food at an upcoming event? The Bell Tower Festival, RAGBRAI and other summer events are often fundraisers or service projects for clubs and non-profit organizations. From popcorn to hotdogs, nachos to fresh fruit, the safety of everyone eating at an event relies on workers and volunteers following proper food safety procedures.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Greene County is offering a Food Safety for Events program to help organizations plan for, prepare, and deliver food safely for occasional events. The program is Thursday, June 1, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the ISU Extension Greene County office in Jefferson.
Participants will learn the basics of safe food handling using four steps – clean, separate, cook and chill. The program is presented by Renee Sweers, food and health human sciences specialist, ISU Extension and Outreach. “Serving food safely is not difficult,” said Sweers, “but there are practices we use when serving the public that may be different than what is done in the home kitchen. This hands-on class helps volunteers learn the most important practices to keep the public safe.”
The program is free but pre-registration is requested. To register contact ISU Extension– Greene County, 515-386-2138.
