Residents of the Scranton community were notified late last week of a change regarding service by the United States Postal Service. Since late October 2018 when the Scranton post office building was declared unsafe, residents have been served through the Jefferson post office.
The change notice stated: “Effective immediately, anything that needs picked up at the post office (packages, certified letters, hold mail) will be picked up at the Carroll post office and will no longer be available at the Jefferson post office. Box fees will also be paid for at the Carroll post office. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Any questions, please contact the Carroll post office at 712-792-2341.”
The change from Jefferson to Carroll, according to Carroll USPS officials, stems from staffing of Scranton mail clerk Denise Abernathy and space limitations in the Jefferson building. Abernathy has been delivering the mail to the Scranton boxes located on Main St and finishing her day in the Carroll office.
Eventually the Scranton rural carriers will sort the mail and deliver out of the Carroll office.
Scranton mayor Jerry Boyd stated city officials are working with USPS officials to find a location for an office. Postal officials are expected to check out a building in Scranton in the near future. The city has also surveyed some property that is under consideration for the construction of a new building.
“We just have to jump through their hoops,” noted Boyd. “It’s taking too long.”
For more than four years, Scranton residents have been inconvenienced with only local delivery service and no window service without driving to Jefferson.
