Sheriff’s report – February 2023

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Tuesday, Feb. 28: At 12:40 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with locating a subject near Scranton. The subject was later located in Carroll.

Monday, Feb. 27: At 8:39 pm a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with locating a subject. The subject was located in Casey, IA.

Sunday, Feb. 26: At 11:46 am a deputy arrested Angela Robbins, 50, of Carroll for an arrest warrant for gambling-avoid setoff*. At 3:11 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of possible explosives located in the 1700 block of F Ave in Jackson Township. The state fire marshal’s office was called and determined that it was not an explosive. At 8:10 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Saturday, Feb. 25: At 1:44 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with locating a possible reported vehicle fire on Hwy 30 near Grimmell Rd. There was no fire. At 9:09 am a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton.

Friday, Feb. 24: At 8:35 am a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 1900 block of 130th St in Paton Township. At 10:29 am a deputy assisted the Polk County attorney’s office with trying to locate a subject in Grand Junction. At 12:35 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on 330th St and L Ave in Greenbrier Township. Eduardo Galvan, 23, of Fort Dodge was arrested on a Hamilton County arrest warrant for failure to appear. At 2:37 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1200 block of Main St in Scranton.

Thursday, Feb. 23: At 1:40 pm a deputy arrested Melissa Rysavy, 27, of Scranton on a Boone County arrest warrant for contempt of court*.

Wednesday, Feb. 22: At 6:05 am a deputy investigated a fuel drive off at Paton Pit Stop. The driver was unaware the card machine did not work. At 6:59 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on D Ave near 150th St in Cedar Township. Timothy Cafferty, 61, of Rockwell City struck a deer with a 2011 Dodge Caravan. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,000. At 10:16 am a deputy assisted with getting transportation for a stranded person at Hwys 4 and 30. At 11:32 am a deputy assisted with a semi that was stranded on the icy road on W Ave near 315th St in Washington Township. At 3:38 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a K-9 search of a vehicle at HyVee gas station in Jefferson.

Tuesday, Feb. 21: At 8:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of South Wise St in Paton.

Monday, Feb. 20: At 5:11 am the sheriff and deputies assisted Calhoun County deputies with a pursuit on 110th St near I Ave in Highland Township. Shane Clark, 53, of Paton was arrested on a Greene County arrest warrant for failure to appear*. Calhoun County sheriff’s office will have charges also. At 7:43 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on R Ave south of Redwood Ave in Grant Township. Aron Arthur, 47, of Jamaica struck a deer with a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. Damage to the pickup truck was estimated at $3,500. At 4:21 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in the 1100 block of H Ave in Scranton Township.

Sunday, Feb. 19: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, Feb. 18: At 1:05 am a deputy arrested Shelly Esquer, 59, of Fort Dodge for arrest warrants for gambling-avoid setoff and fraudulent practices- second degree. At 1:42 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a fight in the 700 block of Wild Rose Lane. At 6 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 600 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 9:11 pm the sheriff, deputies, Iowa State Patrol, and Grand Junction rescue responded to a single-vehicle rollover accident on Hwy 30 approximately one-half mile west of T Ave west of Grand Junction. The driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The 2006 Chevrolet Colorado was westbound on Hwy 30 and crossed the center line, entering the south ditch, then rolling and striking a tree. Both the driver and passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene.  The Iowa State Patrol is conducted the investigation. The victims were identified as Shiena Hadley, 41, of Jefferson and Ryan Vaughn, 32, of Jefferson.

Friday, Feb. 17: At 1:40 am Eddie Simpson II, 57, of Jefferson was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- third or subsequent offense, possession of a controlled of marijuana- third or subsequent offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia*.

Thursday, Feb.16: At 3:48 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton. Melissa Rysavy, 27, of Scranton was arrested for violating a court order*. At 12:35 pm the sheriff and a deputy assisted with an unruly inmate in the jail. At 7:40 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of E. State St, Cooper. Bruce Binkley, 61, of Jefferson was arrested for assault causing bodily injury and trespass*.

Wednesday, Feb. 15: At 9:30 am a deputy investigated a complaint of possible found explosives in the 300 block of 250th St in Scranton Township. The state fire marshal’s office was called and they have taken custody of several sticks of dynamite that were found in an old shed. At 10:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton.

Tuesday, Feb. 14: At 7:03 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the parking lot at Wild Rose Casino. Mark Wolterman, 42, of Jefferson struck a concrete pillar with a 2018 Dodge Charger that belongs to the city of Jefferson. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $5,000. The pillar was not damaged.

Monday, Feb. 13: At 8:58 am a deputy assisted with a cow on the railroad tracks near 240th St and Falcon Ave in Scranton Township. At 5:03 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fraud in the 1500 block of U Ave in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Feb. 12: At 4:19 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief at the Grand Junction city park. At 9:23 pm a deputy found a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 4 and 140th St east of Churdan. The driver, Jerry Murphy, 61, of Jefferson was arrested for operating while intoxicated*.  

Saturday, Feb. 11: At 2:23 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 4 near 150th St in Dawson Township. Benjamin Winborne, 34, of Churdan was arrested for driving while license barred*. At 4:59 am the sheriff’s office received a Crime Stoppers tip from Hamilton County that Austin Ferguson, for whom there was an outstanding arrest warrant, was headed toward Jefferson. A deputy located Ferguson driving his 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer on Elm St in Jefferson and attempted to stop him. The driver fled and the deputy pursued. The Jefferson police department assisted with the pursuit that reached speeds of about 75 mph. After a short pursuit, Ferguson’s vehicle ran out of gas on 195th St and R Ave. Austin Ferguson, 28, of Farnhamville was arrested for reckless driving, driving while license barred, eluding- OWI or participating in a felony- second offense*. He was also cited for failure to obey stop signs, failure to provide financial liability, and speed. A passenger in the vehicle, Edwin Ochoa-Melena, 30, of Perry stated he told Ferguson to flee. He was arrested for aiding and abetting eluding*. At 11:54 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity on Fitzpatrick St in Churdan.

Friday, Feb. 10: At 4:54 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 600 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Feb. 9: At 7:20 am a deputy was advised of a car in the ditch in the 400 block of 330th St in Willow Township. Julie Nielson of Coon Rapids was traveling eastbound when she struck a patch of ice and went into the ditch. There was no damage to her vehicle. At 7:20 am a deputy was advised of a car in the ditch in the 400 blk of 330th St in Willow Township. William Shull of Clarinda was eastbound when he struck a patch of ice, causing his 2016 Ford Fusion to enter the ditch. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $1,500. At 10:51 am a deputy was advised of a dog bite in the 700 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Wednesday, Feb. 8: At 8:27 am a deputy responded to the 900 blk of A Ave in Cedar Kendrick Township for a complaint of an injured deer. At 12:40 pm a deputy assisted the Grand Junction light plant in the 1000 block of Railroad St E in Grand Junction. At 7:28 pm a deputy was advised of an injured deer in the 2000 block of R Ave in Franklin Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 7: Routine activity reported.

Monday, Feb. 6: At 9:22 am a deputy and the Greene County Ambulance responded to a single- vehicle accident in the 1000 blk of Highway 4 north of Jefferson. The driver was a male juvenile who was operating a 2008 Toyota Camry. The driver lost controlled of the vehicle. Damage to the vehicle exceeded value.

Sunday, Feb. 5: At 10:38 am Adam Coy, 31, of Grand Junction was booked into the county jail for attempted murder, willful injury- causing serious injury, and domestic abuse*.

Saturday, Feb. 4: At 11:09 am a deputy was advised of cattle out in the 2200 block of Highway 30 east of Grand Junction. At 7:34 pm a deputy performed a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Highway 30 east of Jefferson. The traffic stop is under investigation for possible illegal drugs found inside the vehicle. At 9:52 pm Grand Junction rescue responded to a 9-1-1 call in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Rescue personnel assessed the scene and advised the Greene County deputy it was a possible gunshot wound. This was an isolated injury and there is no threat to the public.

Friday, Feb. 3: At 12:36 pm a deputy investigated an aggressive dog in the 100 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. At 12:40 pm a deputy was advised of multiple parking complaints in the city of Jefferson. At 4:42 pm a deputy was advised of a raccoon in the shelter house in the city park in Churdan. The complainant was concerned about children playing in the area.

Thursday, Feb. 2: At 1:13 pm a deputy responded to the 900 blk of 277th St in Greenbrier Township for a trespassing complaint.  At 4:15 pm a deputy was advised of a single vehicle accident in the 1100 blk of 237th St in Jackson Township. Tanya Jackson, 54, of Scranton was westbound and lost control of her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. Damage to the vehicle was minor.  At 5:46 pm a deputy transported an inmate from the Carroll County jail back to the Greene County jail.

Wednesday, Feb. 1: At 9:01 am a deputy transported inmates from Hamilton and Webster County back to the Greene County jail. At 9:33 am a deputy noticed the crossing gates on the railroad crossing were not working properly on N. Maple St in Jefferson. The deputy notified Union Pacific. At 2:13 pm a deputy went to Boone County to transport an inmate back to the Greene County jail.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
