William Jay “Bill” Calvert passed away peacefully February 20, 2023, at Bethany Manor Charlene’s Place in Story City, where staff there and from Midwest Hospice went above and beyond on providing excellent care and support. Bill passed after an 18-month struggle with dementia.
He was born to Robert W. Calvert Jr. and Marjorie Crandell on Nov. 4, 1948, in Jefferson. Bill grew up in Ames and Carroll before moving to Story City. Bill moved to Story City to be closer to his brother Chris, who was his best friend.
Bill graduated from Carroll High School in 1967. While attending high school he lettered in sports. He continued his education at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, and later graduated from Mankato State University in Mankato, MN, with a bachelor’s degree. He worked for General Electric for over 20 years until the plant’s closing. He then worked as a doorman at Sam’s Club in Ames until his retirement.
After his retirement he enjoyed vacations with his brother, going to places such as Washington, DC and Las Vegas. He was an avid race fan and with his grateful brother traveled all over the Midwest to auto races. One year he set a goal of making 100 races and fell short due to rainouts. Bill also enjoyed time with his dad and stepmom Margaret, two people whom he admired very much. Bill always had a very deep love for his family. His dad was a hero in his eyes. Bill loved traveling home to Jefferson to see his mom prior to her passing. Enjoying the food, she had a knack for making a very good pot roast.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie (Crandell) Moorman in 2014; infant sister Kristin Gay Calvert in 1960; stepdads Voshel Moorman and Dean Perry; his grandparents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins on both parents’ side of family.
He is survived by his dad Robert W Calvert Jr.; stepmom Margaret Calvert of Charles City; brother Christopher Calvert (Carmen) of Story City; aunt Billie Pevestorf of Jefferson; two stepsisters; many cousins; other relatives and friends.
