At the Jan. 30 meeting of the Greene County board of supervisors, assistant county attorney Laura Snider presented an ordinance proposed by the city of Jefferson establishing a board of directors for the new animal shelter.

Snider asked the supervisors to review the ordinance before the city council votes on it.

Snider said the animal shelter board is proposed to have seven members, with one member appointed by the board of supervisors each year.

Snider also told the board there are currently two juveniles participating in the new community services program.

In other business, ambulance director Michele Madsen requested the supervisors increase the hourly and on-call rates paid to some part-time staff. Madsen said certain employees spend extra time each month making sure shifts are covered.

The board unanimously approved an increase of $1.50 per hour during patient-contact time for part-time employees Lori Harrah, Bethany Hauptmann, Dick Moranville, Dan Moranville, and Tyler Lux.

The board also unanimously approved an increase of $1 per hour for on-call hours for Dick Moranville, Dan Moranville, and Lori Harrah. This brings their total hourly wage to $5.00 for on-call hours.

The board discussed an Iowa Department of Transportation Federal Aid agreement for the bridge project planned on S.  Grimmell Rd. The agreement states Greene County is the lead governmental agency for the project.

The bridge is also known as the Jackson Bridge and is technically within the city limits of Jefferson. According to previous information given the supervisors, the designation as a county project can be given because the bridge is part of a farm-to-market road.

The supervisors unanimously approved the agreement.

Greene County Extension director Lori Mannel gave the supervisors a brief statement of ways Extension serves the people in the county. Mannel mentioned mental health awareness, youth programming, and career readiness activities.

Mannel said a “master conservationist” program is planned for 2023.

The supervisors unanimously approved the treasurer’s semi-annual report ending Dec. 31, 2022 and the Wage Publication report for 2022.

The board noted the 2023 route for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) July 22-29 was announced with part of the route going from Carroll to Ames. Jefferson would not be an overnight stop but could be a pass-through town.
