Public health to repeat dementia prevention course

The first 10-week Unlocking Brain Fitness: Keys to Dementia Prevention course was launched by Greene County public health in early November with an outstanding response from area residents. Following this success, public health director Becky Wolf has planned the next 10-week course to begin Feb. 28.

“This is a doctor-developed program utilizing scientific, evidence-based research to provide participants with the tools and resources they need to adopt positive lifestyle changes that could reduce their risk of dementia by as much as 70 percent,” Wolf explained. “There is no cure for dementia, but many types can be delayed or prevented and we want to provide the education needed for everyone to optimize brain fitness.”

Wolf and public health nurse Deb Hoskins partner with other experts to bring a focus to each of sessions. Attendees will learn about the role a variety of factors play in brain fitness, such as diet, exercise, sleep, chronic diseases, medications, water intake, stress, hearing and socialization. The local subject matter experts will meet with the class and explain what steps they can take to help preserve their memory and cognitive skills.

KEYS is made possible through a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and is designed for those 55 and older who do not have a diagnosis of dementia or significant cognitive decline. Greene County Public Health will host the sessions on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 pm,  Feb. 28 through May 2, at the Greene County Community Center.

There is a registration fee of $20 per person. Persons who want more information or to register can contact Greene County public pealth at 515-386-3228.
