The Greene County girls basketball team kicked off the 2023 portion of their season last week with two home showings, but fell short in both games.
On Monday, the Rams hosted Webster City, falling 43-19.
A slow start doomed the Rams. The Lynx opened up a 14-2 lead in the first. Both teams struggled in the second frame, each scoring three points. Greene County put eight points on the board in the third while holding WC to six but the fourth frame went to the Lynx as they outscored the Rams 20-6 for the 43-19 victory.
No stats were available for the game.
Greene County had a chance but came up short against Saydel. The score was 6-5 in the first with the Rams pulling away to a 13-7 halftime lead. After three frames, GC still held a 22-17 lead. The Eagles went to work in the fourth, scoring 22 points while holding the Rams to 11 for the 40-33 win.
The Rams’ score was a season high. Kamryn Sanders had a big night, scoring 14 points with four offensive and four defensive rebounds, two steals and four blocks. Emma Shipley scored eight points for Greene County, including two three-point baskets. As a team, the Rams had 14 offensive and 29 defensive rebounds, nine assists, seven steals and seven blocks.
Standings in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference as of Jan. 9 were Roland-Story 4-1, South Hamilton 4-1, West Marshall 4-1, Nevada 3-2, PCM 3-3, Saydel 1-4, Greene County 0-5, Perry 0-2.
