The Greene County hoops teams were no match for the Roland-Story teams when the Norse played in Jefferson Dec. 2. The girls were whomped 63-17 and the boys lost 68-37.
The Ram girls struggled to get the ball through the hoop from the opening jump. They were behind 19-6 after the first quarter and added just three points in the second quarter as the Norse added 22 more points, for a halftime score of 41-9. The clock started running continuously less than a minute into the second half, with the score 44-9.
The Rams scored four points in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter. The team struggled to control the ball, committing 33 turnovers to the Norse’ nine.
Emma Hoyle led the Rams in scoring with six points. Esther Van Horn and Emma Shipley scored four points each, Payton Kokenge scored two points and Daniele Madsen scored one point. Kamryn Sanders led in rebounds with 13, 12 of them defensive rebounds. The team had only five offensive turnovers for the game. They made 28.6 percent of their shots from the floor and five of their 10 free throws.
The loss put the Ram girls at 0-2 for the season.
The boys played a solid first quarter against the Norse, taking a 5-4 lead on a 3-point basket by Brynley Ruzicka and having a 9-7 lead with less than a minute to play in the quarter. The Norse scored last to hold a 10-9 lead when the quarter ended.
Unfortunately, the Rams maintained that scoring pace while the Heart of Iowa defending champions picked up their pace considerably. The Rams scored only six points in the second quarter and were down 28-15 at halftime. The score was 53-24 after three quarters.
Ruzicka and Gabe Ebersole each scored eight points and Richard Daugherty scored seven. Nathan Behne added six points, Patrick Daugherty scored four points, and Jesse Miller and Trey Schilling each scored two points. Ruzicka made two 3-point shots, while Ebersole, Richard Daugherty and Behne made one each.
The Rams were successful on 14 of 47 shots from the floor for 29.8 percent and five of 20 three-point shots for 25 percent. They made four of 12 free throws for 33.3 percent.
Richard Daugherty led in rebounds with five, four of them defensive rebounds. The teams both committed 16 turnovers, but the Rams had 23 rebounds on the game, while the Norse had 46 rebounds.
The Rams are 1-1 on the season.
