The Greene County Rams boys varsity basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 38-33 win over the Ogden Bulldogs Tuesday in Jefferson.
The game was close in all four quarters, with the Bulldogs up 9-8 after the first quarter, the Rams ahead 18-15 at the half, and the Bulldogs in the lead again, 26-25, after three quarters.
Senior Jesse Miller led the Rams in scoring, with 19 points – eight field goals and three free made free throws. Junior Gabe Ebersole had nine points with a 3-point shot and three field goals. Senior Richard Daugherty scored seven points, with a pair of tres and a free throw. Senior Patrick Daugherty scored three points on one basket.
As a team the Rams shot only 35.7 percent from the floor, 20 percent from 3-point range, and 50 percent from the free throw line.
Defensively, Richard Daugherty and Ebersole were credited with eight defensive rebounds each and two offensive rebounds each. Junior Brynley Ruzicka had five steals.
Senior Jack Christensen led the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 points. His team shot 22 percent from the floor, and 36.4 percent from the free throw line.
The girls team lost 55-21. The Bulldogs took an early lead, going up 17-4 after one quarter. The score was 24-10 at half time and 39-19 after three quarters. The Rams scored only two points in the fourth quarter.
Senior Emma Hoyle was the high scorer with nine points. Sophomore Emma Shipley sored four points, and seniors Kamryn Sanders and Ashlynn Hinners, junior Adison Gallagher, and sophomore Danielle Madsen scored two points each. Hinners made two of two free throws.
The Rams made 23.7 percent of their shots from the floor and 50 percent of their free throws.
Sanders led in rebounds with 10 defensive rebounds and four offensive rebounds. Sophomore Peyton Kokenge had seven rebounds, six of them defensive.
The Rams were scheduled to travel to Panora to play Panorama Wednesday; the game was postponed to Dec. 5. The Rams will host the Roland-Story Norsemen Friday.
