To the editor,
Everyone regardless of race, gender, and income should be concerned about the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Basic rights and freedoms should be guaranteed for everyone. After all, that’s the purpose behind the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the 14th Amendment which provides for equal treatment and due process for all regardless of state.
But now, Republican lawmakers have opened the floodgates in states – taking away the rights and freedoms of those seeking an abortion. They are proposing nationwide bans, criminalizing abortions for women and doctors, and jailing women for the duration of their pregnancies if they seek abortion care.
Deciding when and whether to start a family is a personal decision. It is a decision that should be made by an individual, not a lawmaker or a Supreme Court justice. It is a right that must be protected. Now that Roe has been overturned, the Supreme Court will likely erode more rights. This is why we must elect lawmakers who will protect our rights and freedoms.
I trust Cindy Axne. She has already voted to protect abortion access and birth control access so I know she will keep fighting to protect our rights and freedoms in Congress.
