Sheriff’s report – September 2022

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Friday, Sept. 30: At 4:34 am a deputy found a missing stop sign on 130th St and U Ave near Paton. At 9:58 am a deputy removed debris from the roadway on N Ave near 110th St in Dawson Township. At 11:14 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1900 block of 130th St in Paton Township.

Thursday, Sept. 29: At 4:43 pm a deputy and Grand Junction fire responded to a field fire on 250th St and W Ave in Junction Township.

Wednesday, Sept. 28: At 8:55 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on 330th St and Apple Ave in Willow Township. Dale Hoyt, 82, of Scranton was northbound on Apple Ave in a 2002 International truck. Bradley Feld, 53, of Glidden was westbound on 330th St in a 2008 Freightliner. Hoyt stopped at the stop sign and then pulled out, striking Feld’s vehicle. Hoyt was cited for failure to yield right of way. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $10,000. Damage to Feld’s vehicle was estimated at $1,000. At 4:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment at the Paton city park. At 5:32 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of Main St in Scranton.

Tuesday, Sept. 27: At 10:05 am a deputy and Scranton fire responded to a barn fire in the 1400 block of D Ave in Scranton Township. The fire was started by a small fire near the barn. At 11:10 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Sunday, Sept. 26: At 10:09 am a deputy investigated found property in the 100 block of Sunset Dr in Grand Junction. At 5:45 pm deputies assisted Boone County deputies with an armed subject on 190th St and Highway 169. At 7:35 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on M Ave and 260th St in Greenbrier Township.

Sunday, Sept. 25: At 1:22 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on Highway 4 and 270th St south of Jefferson. At 7:17 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 700 block of Main St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Sept. 24: At 10:45 am a deputy assisted with cattle out in the 1400 block of J Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 5:20 pm a deputy investigated a trespass in the 2300 block of 185th St in Junction Township. At 7:59 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on 280th St near X Ave in Washington Township.

Friday, Sept. 23: At 5:45 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 1400 block of U Ave in Junction Township. At 8:45 pm a deputy assisted with horses out on 130th Street near X Ave in Paton Township.

Thursday, Sept. 22: At 9:17 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1700 block of F Ave Scranton Township. At 12:04 pm a deputy investigated several abandoned vehicles in the 1000 block of State St in Scranton. At 6:27 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1400 block of J Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 6:43 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near M Ave west of Jefferson. Matt Montgomery, 47, of Sioux City was eastbound driving a 2018 ProMaster van when he drifted into the westbound lane. He struck a westbound 2011 Buick Enclave driven by a licensed juvenile. Montgomery was cited for driving in the wrong lane. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $300. Damage to the westbound vehicle was estimated at $500. At 10:57 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on 210th St near Eaton Ave in Kendrick Township. Dalton Ostrander, 18, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, causing an estimated $1,500 damage to the vehicle.

Wednesday, Sept. 21: At 6:54 am a deputy investigated a vehicle theft in the 100 block of N. Cedar St in Jefferson. The vehicle was located in Ames; charges are pending. At 2:42 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 7:35 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Highway 30 near Granite Ave west of Jefferson. Alejandro Flores, 29, of Des Moines was arrested for operating while under the influence- second offense*.   

Tuesday, Sept. 20: At 12:51 pm the sheriff assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle accident on N. Elm St and W. Adams St. At 5:01 pm a deputy investigated a theft of a bank card at Casey’s in Grand Junction.

Monday, Sept. 19: At 9:23 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on Highway 30 near J Ave west of Jefferson. At 10:11 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 2200 block of Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 1:18 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of Eagle St in Scranton.

Sunday, Sept. 18: At 12:40 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest.

Saturday, Sept. 17: At 5:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 600 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 10:17 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 500 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Sept. 16: At 12:15 pm a deputy investigated a report of a missing person in the 400 block in the S. 8th St. The person was located in a hospital. A deputy investigated a UTV complaint in the 300 block of 150th St in Cedar Township.

Thursday, Sept. 15: At 12:11 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 900 block of Main St in Scranton. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass on Sherwood Ave near 330th St in Washington Township.

Wednesday, Sept. 14: At 10:34 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 200 block of E. St in Grand Junction. At 2:50 pm a deputy picked up a stray pitbull dog in the 200 block of 150th St in Cedar Township. At 9:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of kids throwing toilet paper in the 800 block of Percival St in Rippey. At 9:31 pm a deputy and Bayard fire department responded to a grain bin fire on Brentwood Ave near 340th St in Willow Township. The fire was in the dryer and was put out.

Tuesday, Sept. 13: At 6:39 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 700 block of Harding St in Churdan. At 6:54 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity on T Ave near 200th St in Junction Township. At 9:33 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in responding to an assault in the 900 block of W. Adams St.

Monday, Sept. 12: At 6:51 pm a deputy investigated a reported illegal burn in the 200 block of 6th St in Grand Junction. At 6:43 pm a deputy arrested Derek Elge, 28, of California on a California arrest warrant for a parole violation.

Saturday, Sept. 10: At 12:28 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with the arrest of two subjects at Wild Rose Casino. At 5:43 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in the 100 block of W. Elizabeth St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Sept. 9: At 6:53 am a deputy, Grand Junction fire and rescue, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction. Joshua Johnson, 34, of Fort Dodge was southbound on W Ave driving his 2016 Chevy truck. He failed to stop at the intersection with Highway 30 and struck the driver’s side door of an eastbound 2012 Hyundai Genesis driven by Michael Agar, 62, of North Carolina. Agar was mechanically extricated from his vehicle. Two persons were transported to Greene County Medical Center with injuries.  Damage to both vehicles exceeded value. Johnson was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign. At 6:09 pm a deputy investigated a driving and littering complaint on Highway 30 near Grand Junction.  At 6:34 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 177th St and A Ave in Kendrick Township. The vehicle was unoccupied when the deputy arrived. The driver of the 2002 Ford Explorer was a juvenile male. He was cited for failure to maintain control.

Wednesday, Sept. 7: At 10:54 pm a deputy and the Scranton fire department responded to a garage fire in the 500 block of Main St in Scranton. An F-20 tractor backfired in the garage, causing the fire. The garage and the tractor were total losses. A 2021 Chevrolet truck outside the garage was also severely damaged.

Tuesday, Sept. 6: At 11:11 am a deputy investigated a scam in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 12:47 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of littering in the 200 block of S. 6th St in Grand Junction. At 1:44 pm the sheriff and a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 1000 block of 215th St in Jackson Township.

Monday, Sept. 5: At 12:29 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 7:21 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 200 block of 19th St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Sept. 4: At 12:40 am a deputy arrested Jose Melendez, 46, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated* on Highway 30 near J Ave west of Jefferson. Melendez was also cited for failure to have a driver’s license. At 12:05 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 230th St near S Ave west of Grand Junction.

Thursday, Sept. 1: At 6:32 pm a deputy arrested Candice Ortiz, 34, of Grand Junction for a probation violation*.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
