Prairie walk slated at Perkins Prairie Reserve Sept. 10

All prairie-lovers and those who want to learn more about Iowa prairies are invited to Perkins Prairie Preserve west of Jefferson Saturday, Sept. 10, for a guided hike with the Iowa Prairie Network and Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.

The walk will begin at 10 am and finish at noon. IPN board member Derek Miner will lead the walk, pointing out native plants and wildflowers and sharing interesting facts about the site and the plants along the way.

Perkins Prairie Preserve is a 30-acre prairie preserve in Greene County. Carroll Perkins and Karen Voge-Perkins donated the property, which features gently rolling hills of remnant prairie, to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in 2014. It is now owned and stewarded by INHF. Both Carroll and Karen have passed but their legacy lives on through this rare and peaceful remnant prairie.
