It will be hard to duplicate the success of the 2021 Greene County football season but coach Caden Duncan and the Rams are up to the challenge.
The Rams enjoyed an 8-2 season, falling only to AC/GC in overtime in the first game of the season and then to OABCIG in the playoffs.
They won the Class 2A District 8 championship. Greene County was a consensus Top 10 team in the state and were ranked in the top five by the end of the season. The team made it to the round of 16 in the playoffs before losing to OABCIG, who most people around the state considered to be the second best team in 2A.
Many new records were set and overall, the squad produced six All-State players: Richard Daugherty (returner), Nate Black (punter), Jackson Morton (linebacker), Bradyn Smith (linebacker), Michael Rumley (defensive line), and Bryce Stalder (utility).
Duncan was also named the District 8 Coach of the Year. This is his third year at the helm of the Rams, having achieved a respectable 24-7 record. He has been on the sidelines for nine years.
Returning to lead the team in 2022 are letterwinners Patrick Daugherty, Richard Daugherty, Josh Janssen, Jesse Miller, Michael Rumley, Logan Butler, Noah Cornell, Jackson Turner, Trey Schilling, Cody Allen, Gavin Scheuermann, Gabe Ebersole, Jack Hansen, Nathan Behne, Kamden Kinne and Camden Strennen.
The team picked the Daughtery brothers, Ebersole, and Miller as captains.
Duncan feels the team has good speed and playmakers. “We have a lot of good athletes and feel like we have a lot of explosive players on both sides of the ball.
“With a smaller team this year, we don’t have quite as much depth as we’ve had recently but we expect some of our younger guys to develop over the course of the season to build up more depth,” shared Duncan. “We are also not quite as big on the line as we’ve been, but the guys that we have up there are strong and are all good athletes.
