PFI Legacy Award to Henning

Will be presented at June 24 field day/dinner

Chris Henning of rural Cooper will receive Practical Farmers of Iowa’s Farmland Owner Legacy Award at a farm field day and dinner Friday, June 24, at her farm, 1931 Q Ave, south of Jefferson.

The Farmland Owner Legacy Award is presented annually by PFI to a landowner who uses their land to help the next generation get started in agriculture, advance land stewardship, and promote the long-term sustainability of farm businesses, environmental quality, and rural communities. With the award, PFI calls attention to the important role non-operator farmland owners can play in the future success of sustainable agriculture.

During the program, Henning will describe how she and her farmland tenant collaborate on management decisions and practices like cover crops.

She will also share the ways they’ve used regular soil sampling and principles of precision agriculture to enhance productivity and soil health, limit chemical interventions and tillage on crop acres, and identify opportunities for habitat restoration. She will also discuss her experiences with conservation programs like the Environmental Quality Incentives Program and the Conservation

The event begins at 5 pm and will conclude at 8 pm. The event, including the dinner, is open to the public, particularly those interested in land stewardship, habitat and conservation. A dinner RSVP is appreciated before June 18  at bit.ly/22fielddays or by calling 515-232-5661.

Hosts are Practical Farmers of Iowa and Prairie Skye Productions. Field day sponsors are Iowa Farmers Union, Iowa Environmental Council and Sunderman Farm Management.
