Republicans pick Benitz to run for county supervisor; other races go same as rest of Iowa

In the only contested race on the primary ballot in Greene County, Dan Benitz won a spot on the Nov 8 general election ballot for county supervisor from District 3. His victory was a narrow one. Unofficial results show him with 311 votes (43.13 percent). James Hedges received 305 votes (42.30 percent), and Cassie George received 104 votes (14.42 percent).

Benitz will run against Democrat Mike Holden. Holden ran unopposed for the nomination; he received 320 votes.

In the Congressional races, Greene County voters voted with the majority of their party. Michael Franken received 299 votes (75.7 percent) in to claim a position on the November ballot for U.S. Senate on the Democratic ticket. Abby Finkenauer received 84 votes (21.27 percent) and Glenn Hurst received 12 votes (3.04 percent).

Franken will face Republican Chuck Grassley, who has already served 47 years in the U.S. Senate. Grassley received 561 votes (74.11 percent) while challenger Jim Carlin received 196 votes (25.89 percent).

Republican Zach Nunn will square off against incumbent Democrat Cindy Axne for the U.S. House in the 3rd Congressional district. Nunn received 502 votes (72.13 percent), while Nicole Hasso received 105 votes (15.09 percent) and Gary Leffler received 88 votes (12.64 percent).

Full results are available on the Greene County website. Results remain unofficial until the county supervisors canvass the vote at their June 13 meeting.
