Primary Election Day in Iowa is Tuesday, June 7. Voters in the primary must designate either Republican or Democrat as their party and will cast a ballot for only that party’s candidates.
There is only one local race on the Greene County ballot. Dan Benitz, Cassie George and James Hedges are on the Republican ballot for county supervisor for District 3. The winner in the primary will run against Democrat Mike Holden in the Nov. 8 general election.
Incumbent Republican Tom Contner is not seeking another term.
Incumbent Republican Supervisor Dawn Rudolph is seeking re-election in District Two.
There is no Democrat or Republican candidate for county attorney. Incumbent county attorney Thomas Laehn, a Libertarian, plans to run for re-election.
Deb McDonald, who was appointed county recorder after Marcia Tasler retired shortly after being elected in 2020, will run for election to the office. She is a Democrat. There is no Republican candidate on the primary ballot.
Incumbent treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen, a Republican, is seeking re-election. There is no Democrat candidate on the primary ballot.
There are several state offices on the ballot.
Republican Chuck Grassley is challenged by Jim Carlin for U.S. Senator. There are three candidates for U.S. Representative: Nicole Hasso, Gary Leffler and Zach Nunn.
State offices on the Republican ballot include: Governor Kim Reynolds; Secretary of State Paul D. Pate; Todd Halbur and Mary Ann Hanusa, Auditor of State; Roby Smith, Treasurer of State; Mike Naig, Secretary of Agriculture; Brenna Bird, Attorney General; and Carter Nordman, State Representative District 47.
On the Democratic ballot Abby Finkenauer, Michael Franken and Glenn Hurst are candidates for U.S. Senator. Cindy Axne is seeking re-election as U. S. Representative. State officials include: Deidre DeJear, Governor; Joel Miller and Eric Van Lancker, Secretary of State; Rob Sand, Auditor of State; Michael L. Fitzgerald, Treasurer of State; John Norwood, Secretary of Agriculture; Tom Miller, Attorney General, and Gary Clayton Overla, State Representative District 47.
Polls will be open from 7 am to 8 pm in the following locations:
Central: Clover Hall, Fairgrounds, 601 E. Lincoln Way Street, Jefferson
East: St. Brigid Parish Center, 602 Hager Street East, Grand Junction
Jefferson 1: Greene County Community Center, 204 W. Harrison Street, Jefferson
Jefferson 2: Greene County Community Center, 204 W. Harrison Street, Jefferson
North: Community Center, 410 Sand Street, Churdan
West: Community Room/City Hall, 900 Eagle Street, Scranton
Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered – such as voters registering to vote on Election Day – and voters changing precincts must also provide proof of residence.

Any voter physically unable to enter a polling place has the right to vote in the voter’s vehicle.
Early voting is underway. Voters can cast early ballots in person at the auditor’s office in the courthouse during regular business hours through Monday, June 6.
Voters who have requested an absentee ballot by mail should have received them. Absentee ballots must be received back at the auditor’s office by Election Day, June 7. A drop box is available at the east entrance to the courthouse. Only voted ballots should be placed in the clearly designated box.
The auditor’s office will be open Saturday, June 4, from 7 am to 3 pm for absentee voting and other election business.
