From the Rippey library shelves – A warm welcome to our new librarian, Cara McCoy. Cara has been busy in the library and planning events for all ages in the days ahead.
A recent addition to the Rippey library is the Chasing Me To My Grave by Winfred Rembert as told to Erin Kelley, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography for 2022. This book “is a searing memoir in prose with his amazing painted leather art that celebrates Black life and summons the reader to confront the urgent realities at the heart of American history and society.”
The book has a Rippey connection through Sharon Bardole McBlain and her husband Phil, who met Winfred and his wife Patsy, in New Haven, CT, where they all live. Phil helped Winfred begin working with his leather pictures, including those depicting his early life in Cuthbert, GA. It is a very interesting and compelling book to read. ~by Nancy Hanaman
Busy weekend – Toni Roberts accompanied her granddaughter Lindsay Rinehart and son Bentley to attend the dance recital that granddaughter Addie Burkett performed in. Addie, daughter of Wendy and Tony Burkett, is a junior and portrayed the part of Scar in the production of The Lion King.
Later, Lindsay’s husband, Randy, Chris and Brenda Roberts enjoyed dinner at the Tin Pig in Perry. It was an enjoyable day spent with her granddaughters.
Sunday, May 15, Toni was on the road to Winterset, accompanied by her good friend (and honorary grandmother) Jean Borgeson. The occasion was the graduation reception for Toni’s oldest granddaughter, Josie Burkett. Josie, oldest daughter of Wendy and Tony Burkett of Winterset, shared the reception hall with friend and neighbor and fellow graduate, Josie Beeson in the Fellowship Hall of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winterset.
The celebration and exhibit of Josie’s high school career was made even more poignant by the display of her many music, academic awards, medals and even her 4-H record book, many of which were recovered by volunteers and family following the March 5 devastating tornado that destroyed the Burketts’ home and many others.
Among the family and friends attending were Lori Bardole and Brenda Roberts of Rippey and Matt and Sara Roberts of Boone, who were part of the kitchen help for the event.
Josie will attend the University of Iowa in the fall, continuing a family tradition.
Toni and Jean returned home, weary, but happy.
Attend play – Jean Borgeson attended the Perry Middle School production of the one act comedy, We “Loathe” Our Customers, by Bradley Walton, on Friday evening, May 20. Grandson Seth Borgeson was a cast member.
Set in an office supply store where the clerks are known to be rude to the customers, they are informed of an impending visit from an unknown district manager. With their jobs on the line, they suddenly find themselves trying to be more respectful to the customers and their unusual demands. It was an enjoyable performance and the students did well.
Also attending were Seth’s grandparents, Chuck and Sharon Patton and Aunt Kim Dorr of Perry, as well as his parents, Michael and Jill Borgeson of Rippey.
Graduation party – Nancy and Dale Hanaman along with Sarah Pearson, Elizabeth and Andrea of Superior, WI, journeyed to the Pella area for the graduation party for Henry Hick, grandson of Mary and Kevin Hick. The young cousins, Henry and Elizabeth, were born on the same cold January day in 2004.
