Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Tuesday, May 31: At 10:22 am an employee at Oly’s Corner reported a gas drive off in the amount of $69. The officer is investigating.
Monday, May 30: Between 11:18 am and 3:42 pm officers issued six citations for excessive speed at N. Grimmell Rd and W. Central Ave. At 4:05 pm security staff at Wild Rose Casino requested an officer for a banned subject on the gaming floor. The officer cited Robert Strandberg of Rockwell City for trespass (simple misdemeanor)*. At 7:57 pm officers arrested Michelle Ann Cook, 23, of Jefferson on outstanding Greene County arrest warrants for assault (serious misdemeanor) and disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanor)*.
Sunday, May 29: At 3:36 am callers reported a screaming female in the 1300 block of Westwood Dr. An officer and deputy responded to the area and eventually located the subject hiding in the area behind a tree. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Fallon Caroline Heater, 20, of Perry for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and possession of alcohol under legal age (all simple misdemeanors)*. At 2:34 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 200 block of S. Chestnut St. Royce Rosemeyer of Odebolt was southbound driving his 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Melanie Smith of Jefferson backed her 2012 Jeep Liberty from a parking space and struck Rosemeyer’s vehicle as it passed. Smith was cited for fail to provide proof of financial liability- accident related and unsafe backing on a highway. Damage to Rosemeyer’s vehicle and a bike rack and bicycle mounted on the back was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Smith’s vehicle was estimated at $500.
Saturday, May 28: At 12:43 am an officer performed a traffic stop with a speeding motorcyclist in the 1700 block of N. Elm St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jesse Dean Hermansen, 33, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated*. He was cited for excessive speed. At 10:19 am an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 just east of Sparky’s. April Hager of Fort Dodge was westbound driving her 2015 Nissan Pathfinder when she struck the rear of a Case ILH tractor owned and operated by Edward Irlbeck of Dedham. Hager was cited for fail to stop in assured clear distance ahead. Damage to her vehicle exceeded value. Damage to Irlbeck’s tractor was estimated at $500.
Friday, May 27: At 5:23 am a deputy requested assistance from an officer in looking for a juvenile missing from Grand Junction. The officer located the subject at a residence in Jefferson and the deputy took custody of the juvenile. At 10:25 am an officer investigated a two-vehicle accident at W. Clark and N. Maple Sts. Judy Wills of Jefferson was southbound on Maple driving her 2010 Ford Edge. Blain Lucas of Fredericksburg was eastbound on Clark driving a 2015 Dodge Journey. The vehicles collided in the uncontrolled intersection. Wills was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $3,000. Damage to Lucas’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000.
Thursday, May 26: At 1:36 pm an Alliant Energy employee flagged an officer down in the 700 block of W. Sunset Rd. The worker advised a resident at that property was stealing electricity and he had located it. The officer is investigating the report. At 1:51 pm staff at Sparky’s reported a subject had been staying in a vehicle in the parking lot for several days and business management wanted the subject to move on. The officer spoke with the subject and contacted a family member, who arrived and assisted the subject. The subject left the area a short time later. At 2:41 pm an officer spoke to a couple who were panhandling near Elm and W. Lincoln Way. The officer advised the couple they were on private property and the business wanted them to leave. Members of the Greene County Homeless Coalition arrived to assist the couple. At 9:46 pm staff at HyVee reported a subject who they believed may be buying alcohol for underage persons. The officer is investigating.
Wednesday, May 25: At 7:45 am a complainant reported a theft of property from his residence and an unauthorized use of a credit card. The officer is investigating. At 6:24 pm an officer responded to a report of harassment in the 200 block of S. Chestnut St. As a result of the investigation, a warrant was sought for Merissa Olson of Jefferson on a charge of harassment- first degree (aggravated misdemeanor)*.
Tuesday, May 24: At 8 am a resident turned in a small bag containing drug paraphernalia he had located in the 200 block of E. Perry St. At 8:16 am an officer was requested to investigate a vehicle-deer accident on Highway 30 at 4th St in Grand Junction. Shane Allen of Scranton struck a deer in the roadway while driving a 2019 Chevrolet police Tahoe owned by the Greene County sheriff’s office. The vehicle was a total loss. At 10:22 am a complainant reported a possible no contact order violation to an officer. The officer is investigating. At 12:47 pm a caller advised of a mail carrier in the street in the 800 block of W. Washington St who was screaming and appeared to be having an issue. The officer eventually located the carrier and learned two dogs had approached the carrier and she was screaming at the animals. The officer went to the address of the animal’s owner and spoke to them about the issue. The officer gave the subject a time period to get his animals compliant with animal licensing ordinances.
Monday, May 23: At 4 pm a complainant reported a female selling his property while he is incarcerated. The officer is investigating. At 7:29 pm a complainant reported the theft of a leaf blower. The officer located the device in another area of the property. At 9 pm a complainant reported a trespass at an apartment building. The officer spoke to a male who was at the apartment building installing a door. No trespass was occurring.

Saturday, May 21: At 12:59 am an officer located several vehicles at Daubendiek Park and noticed subjects with flashlights in the area. The officer approached the subjects, who were playing disc golf. The officer advised the park was closed and sent them on their way. At 7:02 pm a complainant reported a confused elderly male in the 1000 block of W. Adams St. The officer learned the subject belonged at the Gardens Facility and he was returned there. At 8:38 pm officers responded to Super 8 for a reported suicide attempt. A female subject was taken to Greene County Medical Center by ambulance. During the investigation, officers learned the couple had a no contact order and arrested Zachary W. Clewell, 29, of Alexis, IL, for violation of protective order (simple misdemeanor)*.
Friday, May 20: At 12:25 pm officers were called to Greene County High School. The officers learned that before school began for the day, two male juveniles had been involved in an argument. It was reported that one male juvenile displayed a large knife to the other student. The student advised he was not afraid of a knife and the second male reportedly grabbed a shotgun from the vehicle and displayed the weapon. The officers located the other vehicle involved in the parking lot. It was occupied by two male juveniles. During the interaction, the officers located the shotgun and ammunition in the vehicle. A 16-year-old male was taken into custody and parents were contacted. The juvenile was charged in juvenile court with harassment- first degree (aggravated misdemeanor), carrying weapons on school grounds (Class D felony) and manner of conveyance/assembled gun (simple misdemeanor)*. The juvenile was later transported to a juvenile holding facility in Eldora. At 8:26 pm a deputy requested assistance from an officer at 900 Locust St in Scranton for a fight in progress. The deputy will handle the investigation. At 8:32 pm Wild Rose Casino security staff requested an officer for an intoxicated female. Officers arrived and learned the female had been advised to leave the gaming floor and was located in a room at the Cobblestone Hotel. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Betty Ann Hoyle, 66, of Pleasant Hill for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*.
Thursday, May 19: At 4 pm a caller advised of a male subject pounding on the door and screaming at a residence in the 700 block of W. Adams St. It was reported the male cut vehicle tires before leaving the area. The officer has a suspect and is investigating. At 6:44 pm a complainant requested an officer in the 100 block of W. Washington St to report an assault. The officer spoke with the complainant and the other party involved. This is a continuation of the previous entry.
Wednesday, May 18: At 12:33 pm staff at Greene County High School reported finding two students with vaping devices. The officer will follow up with citations for both students for minor using vapor products. At 4:56 pm a deputy requested assistance from an officer in locating a missing juvenile from Scranton. The juvenile was located in Jefferson.
Tuesday, May 17: At 2:49 am a complainant reported his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen from 1200 S. Mulberry St within the past few minutes. The complainant reported there were several firearms in the vehicle. Officers entered the vehicle into the NCIC System as stolen, and began searching for the vehicle and suspected the same individual involved in the discharge of the firearm at a passing vehicle on N. Cedar St on 5/16 was responsible for taking the vehicle. At 3:13 am the officer located the stolen vehicle in the above entry in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on the driver, who sped off. The officer began to pursue the fleeing driver through city streets. The vehicle traveled south out of the city limits on South Grimmell Road, and the chase continued on gravel roads south of town. The officer lost sight of the vehicle in southern Greene County. A deputy was assisting in the pursuit of the vehicle. At 3:14 am a complainant reported a known male had gone to her residence in the 500 block of S. Chestnut St and pointed a handgun at her boyfriend. This had occurred as the officer began pursuing the stolen vehicle. After losing the vehicle in the chase, the officer went to the complainant’s residence and took the report. The subjects provided the officer with video of the event. The same male involved in the other shooting and the stolen vehicle was in the video committing the crime. The officer began searching for the male suspect again. At 6:31 am the officer noticed the reported stolen vehicle was back at 1200 S. Mulberry St. Officers, deputies, and an Iowa State Trooper surrounded the property. The suspect’s cell phone was still pinging at the address. A team of officers and deputies approached the stolen vehicle, clearing other buildings along the way. The team entered the garage and located the suspect inside. At about 6:59 am the suspect was taken into custody. The four loaded firearms were located in the vehicle, which was returned. Zachary A Waters-Rice, 25 of Jefferson, has been charged with attempted murder-B felony, going armed with intent-D felony, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime-aggravated, dominion control of firearm by domestic abuser-D felony, burglary- third degree – D Felony, operation without owner’s consent- aggravated, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon-aggravated, eluding – aggravated, manner of conveyance/loaded gun-simple, possession of controlled substance/marijuana first offense-serious, possession of drug paraphernalia-simple.* Waters-Rice was also issued traffic citations for driving while suspended, (6) counts of fail to obey stop sign, excessive speed, reckless driving, and unsafe passing.*
Monday, May 16: At 12:24 pm Fed Ex reported one of its employees and vehicles had been involved in a minor accident in Jefferson on 5/13. The officer is gathering information on the incident. At 4:17 pm a mother reported her juvenile daughter had possibly been assaulted at Greene County High School by another student. The officer is investigating. At 8:09 pm a complainant reported he had witnessed a male on a bicycle in the 700 block of N. Cedar St fire a long gun at a passing vehicle. Officers spoke with several witnesses in the area, as well as the driver of the vehicle that was reportedly shot at. There were no signs of damage on the vehicle. Officers began searching for the known male suspect.
Sunday, May 15: At 2:20 am a complainant reported a known subject had pointed a handgun at him near S. Walnut and W. Monroe Sts. The officer is investigating.
Saturday, May 14: At 9:58 am a resident reported catching a stray dog in the 600 block of S. Olive St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 11:29 am an officer while on patrol in the 100 block of E. Monroe St spotted two subjects for whom there were outstanding arrest warrants. The officer arrested Makelia Rose Ranee Brown, 21, of Jefferson, and Harvick Nathaniel Beals, 18, of Jefferson. Both subjects had outstanding Jefferson PD arrest warrants for possession of controlled marijuana (serious misdemeanor), intent to deliver marijuana (class D felony), and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. At 2:18 pm staff at Dollar General reported a customer had located a bag of suspected narcotics in the parking lot there. The officer took possession of the items for destruction. At 3:12 pm a complainant reported finding suspected narcotic items in her residence that belonged to her juvenile granddaughter. Before the officer arrived, the juvenile flushed the items down the toilet. The officer is investigating. At 8:19 pm a complainant reported several large chunks of concrete in the roadway on Highway 4 near the casino entrance. The officer located the items and determined the road had blown out and contacted the DOT.
Friday, May 13: At 8:07 pm a resident reported catching a stray dog in the 700 block of S. Elm St. The officers placed the dog in the animal holding facility.
Thursday, May 12: At 5:12 am an officer was assisted by the Jefferson fire department and the sheriff’s office in responding to a one vehicle personal injury accident on Highway 30 near M Ave. Javier Ramirez of Des Moines was eastbound on Highway 30 driving a 2003 Nissan Altima owned by Amiclar Ulises Navarro Villalta. Ramirez advised he swerved to avoid colliding with a deer in the roadway and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle entered the north ditch and came to rest in a field. One passenger in the vehicle suffered injuries and was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance. He was later flown to a Des Moines hospital by LifeFlight. One other passenger and the driver were not injured. Ramirez was cited for fail to provide proof of financial liability – accident. The vehicle was a total loss. At 3:18 pm Carroll County law enforcement requested an officer check for a Jefferson female for whom there was an outstanding arrest warrant for false information in acquiring a weapon. The officer arrested Nicole Andrea Murphy*, 47, of Jefferson on the Carroll County warrant. At 4:01 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in a yard in the 300 block of N. Maple St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 7:35 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a small fire at 1107 N. Maple St. The homeowner had extinguished the fire and the fire department checked to make sure it was out.
Wednesday, May 11: At 10:50 am an officer investigated an accident at N. Oak and W. State Sts. Carol Delp of Jefferson was southbound on Oak driving her 2009 Toyota Camry. She failed to yield at the posted yield sign at the intersection with State St and struck a westbound 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan operated by Roxanne Tingle of Jefferson and owned by Genesis Development. Delp was cited for fail to yield upon entering through highway. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $1,500.
Tuesday, May 10: At 12:20 am an officer assisted the sheriff’s office with the execution of a search warrant in the 700 block of S. Wilson Ave. At 9:48 am an officer investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of E. Russell St. Sharron Magee of Jefferson was backing her 2016 Honda HRV from a private drive when she struck a parked 2019 Ford Ranger owned by Sheillah Bentley of Des Moines. Magee was cited for unsafe backing. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Bentley’s vehicle was also estimated at $1,000. At 4:59 pm an officer investigated a backing accident at the intersection of W. Central Ave and N. Elm St. Tony Kafer of Jefferson was eastbound driving his 2005 Chevrolet H2500 on Central, stopped as posted. A southbound semi driver attempted to turn west onto Central. Kafer backed his vehicle to give the semi driver more room to make the turn, but he backed into a 2017 Dodge Caravan owned and driven by Tracy Hoodjer of Jefferson. Damage to Hoodjer’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Kafer’s vehicle was estimated at $150. At 5:13 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of N. Vine St. Timothy Heisterkamp of Jefferson was backing his 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck from a diagonal space on the east side of the street when he stuck a northbound 2016 Chevrolet Equinox driven and owned by Jean Finch of Jefferson. Heisterkamp was cited for unsafe backing. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $3,500. Damage to Finch’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000.
Monday, May 9: At 7:30 am a complainant reported a possible no contact order violation. The officer is investigating.
Sunday, May 8: At 1:37 pm a caller advised that a neighbor came to her house at in the 1200 block of Riverside Dr and advised he had been stabbed and was bleeding. Officers arrived and spoke to the male, who advised a known subject attacked him with a sword at a residence in the 700 block of Sunset Rd. The subject gave verbal permission for officers to enter his residence and look for the suspect. The subject had injuries and was transported by ambulance to Greene County Medical Center. Officers did not locate the suspect inside the residence but gathered evidence in the assault. The investigation continues.

Friday, May 6: At 12:57 pm a complainant reported a young naked female child walking near her residence near the 200 block of S. West St. A second caller advised the child arrived at a residence in the 300 block of S. Georgia St. The officer took control of the child and eventually located her apartment in the area. A 13-year-old sibling was watching the child, who left the apartment alone. DHS was contacted. At 1:35 pm a complainant reported numerous tools and other items missing from a residence in the 700 block of W. Sunset Rd after a female moved out of the property. The officer is investigating. At 8:15 pm an officer assisted a deputy with a single vehicle accident at 245th St and M Ave in Jackson Township.
Thursday, May 5: At 3:31 pm a complainant reported unauthorized activity on his credit card. The officer is investigating. ***** An officer received lab results on seized items from a traffic stop on 04/01. The officer has requested arrest warrants for Ethan Michael Hueser, 20, of Fort Dodge for possession of marijuana (serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*.
Wednesday, May 4: At 6:25 pm an officer assisted a deputy on a traffic stop at Highways 25 and 30 at Scranton. At 11:35 pm an officer was following a vehicle in the 100 block of S. Vine St. The driver turned west on W. Harrison St and accelerated. The driver failed to slow or stop at the posted stop sign at S. Elm S. The driver then sped westbound on Harrison. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren and pursued the fleeing driver. A deputy joined in the pursuit and assisted the officer. The chase led through several neighborhoods for several minutes. The driver eventually stopped in the 500 block of N. Vine St and the driver placed his hands out the window. The officer and deputy took the subject into custody. The suspect had tossed a backpack from the vehicle during the chase, and it was located by the deputy in the 500 block of W. Harrison St. The bag contained a sizable amount of suspected marijuana, scales, baggies, and other paraphernalia. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Nicholas Scott Weber, 21 of Scranton, for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor), possession of marijuana- third or subsequent offense (aggravated misdemeanor), controlled substance violation/distribution (Class D felony), eluding while intoxicated or in possession of illegal substances (D felony), and reckless driving (simple misdemeanor)*. He was also cited on nine counts of fail to obey stop sign and one count of excessive speed.
Tuesday, May 3: At 11:02 am a complainant reported a stray dog in her yard at in the 900 block of S. Elm St. The officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 6:42 pm a complainant reported a possible no contact order violation. The officer is investigating. At 8:37 pm a complainant reported receiving two $1 bills in change that he believed may be counterfeit. The officer is working to determine if they are legal tender.
Monday, May 2: Routine activity reported.
Sunday, May 1: At 2:21 am an officer performed a traffic stop near Lincoln Way and Grimmell Rd due to a vehicle having no license plate light. The officer could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Karl Maurice Krieger, 29, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated- second offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*. The officer located suspected marijuana in the vehicle, which was seized for lab testing. Charges are pending lab results. At 5:36 a complainant reported a careless driving on Highway 4 northbound toward Jefferson. The complainant advised the vehicle was all over the road and almost entered the ditch. The officer located the vehicle near S. Elm and Brackett St. and began to follow it. The driver crossed the centerline several times and the officer performed a traffic stop. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of William Joseph Duff, 20, of Scranton for operating while intoxicated (serious misdemeanor) and careless driving (simple misdemeanor)*. At 7:09 pm an officer assisted deputies with a personal injury accident at S. Elm and 250th Sts. At 7:25 pm a complainant reported the theft of his loaded semi-trailer from Sparky’s One Stop. The 2011 Timpte hopper trailer was loaded with Soy Plus and valued at $35,000. The officer is investigating.
