It’s official – the 10th annual Scranton Kids Fishing Day Event has been approved by the Scranton city council for June 4. The committee has chosen the theme ‘Make Fishing a Family Tradition’.
Fishing Day is also Free Fishing Weekend set by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. It will be held at the Scranton Pond Park, located south of Scranton, from 11 am to 2 pm. This event is for kids ages four – 17 and they must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration forms are at the Scranton public library and the Scranton city hall, and are also available through Leesa Squibb 515-370-1339, or Ashley Squibb 515-370-3505. Children must be registered by May 25 and be present to win the name drawings.
“If you have never attended this event, you are missing a day full of fun-filled times,” a committee member said.
The conservation officer for this area will be on hand to talk to the youngsters and answer any questions about fishing they might have. The organizers usually have a few professional fishermen wandering the event willing to talk to kids and show them anything, from tying a knot to a better way to cast from the bank.
A free light lunch and beverage will be served. “Tons of laughter and screams of ‘I caught a fish!’ can be heard. Everyone stops and runs to see who caught what, on what lure, the way it was caught, along with beaming pictures,” the committee member said.
Many gifts are given out from generous donations. Each child will receive a bag filled with coupons and information on fishing. Some lucky winning names will also be drawn for some awesome bigger prizes. “Come help make this a true family tradition of good, old-fashioned fun,” the committee spokesperson concluded.
