Greene County Medical Center’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is recruiting for volunteer counselors to join its team. As one of the first medical centers to become a SHIIP volunteer service center, Greene County Medical Center’s SHIIP program is committed to helping seniors sort through confusing information about Medicare and health insurance with the help of these volunteer counselors.
The Greene County Medical Center SHIIP program was recognized for serving Jefferson and the surrounding communities for the last 30 years by the State of Iowa last July.
“For the past 30 years Greene County Medical Center has been committed to investing in our communities,” said Angela Wadsworth, SHIIP coordinator. “SHIIP is just one of the many ways we are able to give back to the citizens of Jefferson and the surrounding area, including you and your loved ones. SHIIP counselors help seniors navigate the complicated and confusing Medicare insurance options.”
SHIIP counselors provide one-on-one assistance to help Medicare beneficiaries, their caregivers or representatives with questions and concerns related to Medicare and health insurances. Counselors will also advocate on behalf of beneficiaries, educate individual beneficiaries on Medicare related issues and work to promote SHIIP throughout the community with flexible volunteer hours.
Requirements to apply are listed below:
-Must be at least 21 years of age.
-Must pass a federal criminal background check.
-Volunteer training will be provided.
-Volunteers will shadow an experienced SHIIP volunteer counselor to learn more.
-Volunteers must commit to 12 months as SHIIP volunteer counselor.
Applications are being accepted now for volunteer SHIIP counselors. Interested persons can contact Mary Tighe at billmary71@gmail.com, call SHIIP at 1-800-351-4664 or email SHIIP@iid.iowa.gov.
